I never knew James, but I have known many great Docs like him. He was friends with, and trained with, several of my junior Corpsmen. They were in country with him when he gave his life trying to save another; just doing his job. James is very much missed by the Hospital Corps community, as well as the Marines with which he served. We all lost a Hero, but Heaven got a Doc. RIP my Brother. I'll meet you soon enough.

To the family of Doc Layton,

Me and James hung out the last month he was in CAB. He was a wonderful human being. And a great friend. A cool dude to enjoy some beers with. It all was a shock when i heard the news. I didn't see it coming. And I am so proud to know a hero...he risked his life to held out another Marine. Thats why Docs are the Angels of the Marine Corps. Without them we would be screwed.

To All the Layton Family:

Please accept our sincere condolences at this time. Even though we didn't know James, we shed tears when we heard about your great loss. Our son is also HM3(FMF), serving in Afghanistan at this time. We can only imagine your sorrow and pain, but want you to know how much we care. It is a very great sacrifice that your son and your family have made in the service of our country, and in the noble cause of him serving others in time of need....and we want you to know that others appreciate that and will not forget.

I just read about this Hero in the paper. How proud you must feel that your son was a true American Hero. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.
