James Smith Obituary

James R. "Smitty" "Bud" Smith
JUL 14, 1931 - SEP 28, 2013
On the evening of September 28, 2013, Smitty passed away unexpectedly in Modesto.  He was 82 years old.   Beloved husband, father, "Papa", brother, brother in law, uncle and friend, he was loved by all and will truly be missed.
A Modesto native, Smitty was born on July 14, 1931 to James C. and Genevieve Smith. He is a Navy veteran who was a crewmember of the USS Leyte CV22 during the Korean War. It was while on leave in New   Jersey that he met the love of his life and wife of 61 years, Grace.
Smitty worked as a machine mechanic in the manufacturing industry for over 40 years, and upon retiring enjoyed pastimes such as bass fishing, playing Pinochle and Bunco, watching his favorite "Westerns", gardening and especially working as a handyman for his children.  He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church and an active member of their senior organization.
With his infectious laugh, big heart, and positive outlook on life, Smitty put a smile on the faces of all those who met him.
Smitty was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gene, and sisters Louise Robbins and Barbara Koch.  He is survived by his wife Grace, children Jim (Sue) Smith, Barry (Sheila) Smith, Ross Smith, Pamela (Brian) Schnack, grandchildren Trisha Smith and Nicolas Schnack, brother Greg (Barbara) Smith, sister Margie (Kurt) Lewis and several brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces and nephews.
Donations can be made to Our Lady of Fatima Church on his behalf.
A viewing will be held at Franklin and Downs on McHenry Avenue from 3:30 to 5:00 pm, followed by a Rosary at 6pm on October 7th.  Mass will be at 10 am on October 8th at Our Lady of Fatima Church, followed by a respectful Veterans' ceremony at Lakewood Cemetery.  A reception at Our Lady of Fatima Church will follow the burial ceremony.

Smitty was a great guy to know. He was always silly, and fun to be around. We worked together for many years - he was a terrific mechanic - and I have so many wonderful memories of him. Rest in peace, my friend.

I worked with Smitty for many years at Tri Valley. He was always helpful and and easy to work with. He was missed when he retired and I know he will be greatly missed by his family.
