Some people make a mark in this world without even knowing it. My best memories of my 23 years in the Alameda County Public Defender's Office are my early years with Ramon. Although we were't close, he stands out in my memory as one of the best of the best, both in court and out. His quiet dignity and professionalism often belied his obviously intense sense of right and wrong, including activities of the office administration. He called a spade a spade; he brooked no bureaucratic idiocy or supervisorial cowardice. I remember most vividly his wry, dry humor, often used to demonstrate absurd situations without anger. He had honesty and integrity seldom seen in the legal world. Although I haven't been in touch with him and Martha for a long while, I am profoundly sad that this world—that he worked so hard to make better—no longer has Ramon to fight for it.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Ramon's death. My husband Lupe Pacheco and I have not seen Ramon for many years but he played an crucial role in our lives, introducing us to each other in 1975 at school board meeting. Ramon and I, on behalf of CRLA and Concilio, were advocating on behalf of Chicano students and teachers. I see that Ramon continued to live and practice law with the same sense of justice and passion he showed back in the day. Please accept our sincerest condolences.

It is with the greatest sadness that I have learned of Ramon's death. For all those years that we shared desks toiling in the bullpen of the Alameda County Public Defender's Office, and even after we went our separate ways, I always admired Ramon's balance and perspective in the pursuit of justice and fairness in life for all those who became ensnared in the system. Martha, I don't know if you even remember our short crossing of paths, but I truly want you and your children to know that Ramon was one of the good people I had the pleasure to play and work with, and that there were many, many, many people who share this opinion. Love and condolences.

Ramon, your dedication and commitment for fairness and social justice on behalf of the community will be missed, but your legacy will live on in those you helped. Peace and love to Martha y familia.
