Deputy Robert Paris of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department was killed in the line of duty on Thursday, April 12, 2012, in Modesto, Calif.
Sheriff's officials said he and another man were serving eviction papers at an apartment complex when the men were gunned down by someone inside the house.
Paris was 53, a 16-year-veteran of the sheriff's department.
"This is a tragic day for law enforcement and public safety,"" said Sheriff Adam Christianson. ""Deputy Paris paid the ultimate price, sacrificing his life, while protecting and serving the citizens of Stanislaus County.
""Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob's family, the community, our sheriff's family and all the law enforcement personnel from every jurisdiction in the central valley who come to our aid today.""
Deputy Paris is survived by his parents, a sister, a brother and two adult children.

It is an honor to have served in the law enforcement community with Bob as my brother Officer. He is a true hero, who daily put on his uniform to protect those that can not protect themselves.

I met Bob in Montana where we both worked as hunting guides for Trophies West. Spent a lot of time checking out new country and relaxing with a cold beer at the end of a days guiding with him. He truly loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. I'm a full time fishing guide so we always had lots to talk about. He was and always will be my friend.

Although I have only known Bob for a few years, I feel like he has been a dear friend for many more. Since meeting my coworker and best friend Janelle in 1997, she told the story of an awesome father to their daughter Jami, and supportive friend to her during many difficult days. The first time I met Bob was when my son escorted Jami to her high school formal. I had a difficult time holding back tears as I watched a proud father smile proudly with his only daughter at his side. Janelle was never alone in her many trips to Stanford as Bob was always there to support Jami in her many surgeries, procedures, and appointments. In recent months Bob has been a regular visitor to Janelle's Tracy home. Their many hours spent in the movies, bike rides, weekends at Bob's favorite fishing spots, and a trip to Palm Springs to celebrate a nursing award Janelle had won were testaments their relationship was returning to one they once knew. I will miss these stories. My heart aches for Jami and Janelle, but also for his parents and family who instilled kindness in their son!

I met Bob in the academy, we both got along great from the start. One day as we stood in formation, word came that the director had collapsed in the gym, Bob didn't hesitate, he ran to help, our two instructors looked surprised, Bob didn't ask permission to leave, he didn't need to, he knew what to do, and he did it. That told me all I needed to know about Bob; a good man, a solid citizen, my friend. Thanks Bob.

When I saw the picture of Bobby I saw those blue eyes. The Paris family all have beautiful eyes. I also remembered when baby Eric was born. Bobby then became the "older" brother..I appreciated Beth's comments about the fun times in the cul de sac, and there were many!
I share a poem with you that I think has great meaning and hope:
Whatever your cross,
whatever your pain,
There will always be sunshine ,
after the rain...
Perhaps you may stumble,
perhaps you may fall,
But God's always ready,
to answer your call...
He knows every heartache,
sees every tear,
a word from His lips,
can calm every fear...
Your sorrows may linger,
throughout the night,
but suddenly vanish,
dawn's early light...
The savior is waiting,
somewhere above,
to give you His grace,
and send you His love...
Whatever you cross,
whatever your pain,
"God always sends rainbows...
after the rain..."
Love you all and pray for strength in the coming days.

When I first heard what happened last Thursday, I was working. I wrote on this at the beginning but was still in shock. My sister called and asked me if I heard what happened to Bobby Paris. I went into some shock right afterward from the devastating news. I have known you more years than I can remember. I always looked forward to your phone calls because you were always so pleasant, so funny, so kind. You had a way about you that would just make people smile or laugh. I always looked forward to you telling me that you would be driving through Reno on your way home from one of your many hunting trips so I looked forward to seeing you. You really knew how to enjoy life, aside from serving & protecting. You lived life to the fullest and didn't take it for granted. It was only a few weeks ago that I last spoke to you so when I heard what happened, I cried all day. I know that God has you safe in His arms now and that you are okay but I grieve for the loss of not seeing you or hearing from you again and the many, many lives you've touched and all the people that love you. I am also so sorry for the loss of Glendon and the sorrow it has caused for his wife and loved ones. Bob, we will always love you and hold you dear in our hearts. Thank you for being such a wonderful friend.
