Janet Phillips
August 24, 1917 - November 8, 2014
Carmel
Our beautiful mother, Janet Searle Phillips died peacefully November 8, 2014. She lived an adventurous long life and wove tales of her travels to RI in a Model T, dances at Dartmouth, typhoons in the Pacific and stilettos in San Francisco.
Daughter of Frederick and Dorothy Williams, she was born in Newport, RI and spent her early years in Alabama where her father was the Hydraulic Engineer for Wilson Dam. She studied at Katherine Gibbs, managed the Credit at Gladdings and in 1943 married Draper Phillips. War time orders took them to Princeton, Carmel, Palo Alto and post war to Seoul, Korea. Returning to the US in 1948, they settled in Sierra Madre, CA. In 1975, they retired to Carmel.
A talented organizer, Janet shared her artistic ability and cultural knowledge to gently enrich all of our lives. During the war she worked with teams of women to sew layettes for the Red Cross. In Sierra Madre, she stitched doll clothes, bloomers and moo-moos, raising funds for school and church. She organized teas to benefit Children's Theater and the Library. She was the wedding coordinator at All Saints Church.
Survived by Diane and John Hamlyn, Patricia Skowrup, Meredith and Bob Lindley; Grandchildren Tyler and Matthew Skowrup, Catherine Lindley Dayan, Stephen Lindley, JJ Hamlyn and Sarah Solari; Great Grandchildren: Luke and Jack Skowrup, Jacob Dayan, Luke, Nico, Kevin Hamlyn, Matt, Joe, Gianna Solari.

I will deeply miss Janet's laugh, incredible sense of humor, and her promise to crochet a car cover for me. It was always a joke, of course, but we continued to howl over it. What an exceptional woman, mother and wife she was. She will always been remembered with great love and more importantly - anyone who thinks of her will immediately have a smile on their face.
