My Cousin,

Were you the dragonfly that flew by as I swam in the pool? And did you follow me to the ferry and sit on the back of the chair ahead? Were you the one sitting on the bench this morning as I sipped coffee on the patio? For a dragonfly is said to be the spirit of a loved one who has come back for a visit. As I drove to Va, many things went through my mind that I thought I could write to you. Instead I have written them on my heart where they will stay. What I will tell you is this....as I said goodbye to Hand Ave yesterday, I buried a token of myself that will keep me there in spirit. What I took away are so many memories that began many years ago with Uncle Victor, Hoppy and the guys as they opened the house and we'd be there for dinner....and to help with the dishes. Of Aunt Alberta who laid newspaper on the table so we could crack cantaloupe seeds and eat the precious white part that she said was good for us. I've come to realize what a wise woman she was keeping us occupied on summer nights. Then there were the brassy blond bangs that opened Pop's eyes wide open. They grew out. More recently was your story as you gave me my train set. Funny! (Those trains have been given to a man with two grandsons. I will know this Christmas that the lights will shine and the shadows of passengers will shine through the windows.) And then your generosity on Cousin Weekends. Memories that belong to me to remember with great fondness. So as Bob Hope would say....thanks for the memories.
