Julie is a sweetheart and I have so many fond memories :O). She's a wonderful person and a good friend.
May 7, 2014
Julie was one of us. There were 15 or 20 or 25 of us--all in our 20s and 30s, teammates in the newsroom at The Albuquerque Tribune. It's hard to come to grips with the fact that we're mortal. Julie was a bright one. Beautiful smile. Husky laugh. Shy. Pretty. Good reporter and writer. Two articles I'll remember: Sage and the Billy Joe Cyrus "Achy Breaky Heart" song.
I've lost track of many of those 15 or 20 or 25 teammates. Yet I'll never forget them. I don't remember my last conversation with Julie or the last time I saw her. Ironically, it was just a few days ago, maybe three days before I learned of her passing, that for some reason I cannot recall, I was thinking about her: where she is, how she is doing, what she's doing. I never corresponded after our paths separated. But I'll never for get her. She was a winner. So sad.

Julie was one of the first friends I made at The Albuquerque Tribune, and one of the first of many I admired for their storytelling skill. She had just written "Sage," a profile of a young girl enduring the skin grafts and pain of a fire. It set the example for the power and possibility of narrative journalism back in the day when space, time, sensitive storytelling, and photo journalism were not in fashion. She was a thoughtful person and it showed in her work. I remember her wit and laughter well. My thoughts go out to her father and family.

I'm quite saddened to hear of Julie's passing. She was a great writer and a very warm person. I knew her from when I worked for the Akron Beacon Journal from 1998-2002 covering the Cavaliers. We met because we had some common friends since she had worked for the Albuquerque Tribune prior to when I worked at the Albuquerque Journal from 1995-98. My condolences to her family.
