Dear Kate,
I send you my deepest condolences to you and your family, on the passing of your beautiful father. I use that adjective not just to describe him physically but, to also describe the amazing man behind the legendary actor. I've read two of his books and a biography that was written by Michael Freedman. I've also read articles and watched many of his films. He is my favorite actor of all time. No other actor can make me laugh, smile, cry, elevate my spirits or touch my heart more deeply than Peter O'toole.
I was reminded of my favorite film, “Goodbye Mr. Chips.” I first saw it when I was thirteen with my mother. I read that your father was your best friend. My mother was my best friend, she died fifteen years ago. She introduced me to many things in the areas of art and literature. Katherine Hepburn was her favorite actress. I learned much about her, Cary Grant and others. But when I was introduced to your father, she emphasized that this man was not only an amazing actor he was from Ireland! Yes, that was a very big deal. My great grand parents came from County Cork, Ireland. My mother was very proud of her Irish heritage and taught her children to do the same. I know how dear to your father's heart, Ireland was. It's one of the many things I admire him for.
I've read in three or four places about what an amazing father he was. I also learned that he was the parent that you and your sister confided in most. I know that your father loved all three of his children deeply. Based on my own experience, I think that a love of children and people in general are very common among the Irish. Your father's love and devotion to his children is what I admire and respect the most. He was most definitely one of the greatest actors on stage and in film, of all time. His commitment to acting is evident throughout his long career. He puts so much energy into every character he portrays and makes it look effortless. His strong, kind and joyful spirit lives on in the hearts of all who have loved him, and in his lengthy legacy of films.
Very Sincerely,
Jane
Zophy
