LORAIN - Theodore "Ted" Robert Engelhardt, age 63, and a resident of Lorain, died Thursday, December 27, 2012 at his residence.
He was born in Lorain, September 5, 1949, to the late Ted R. and Mildred J. (nee James) Engelhardt. Ted was a 1968 graduate of Marion L. Steele High School, Amherst. Following graduation, Ted enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam era, serving four years. He was employed by the United States Steel Corporation, Lorain, where he had been employed for more than 40 years. For several years, he was a general foreman of Seamless Maintenance. He then became a manager of Labor Relations. At present, he was a consultant at the steel plant.
More than anything, Ted enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his four children; Emily A. (John) Herrmann, James T. (Hollie Anderson), Theodore R. Jr., Daniel J. (Sara Schaffer); six grandchildren; Genevieve and Jack Herrmann, Carly, Cait, Olivia, and Autumn Engelhardt; his siblings; Susan (Dr. John) Schaeffer, Cindy (Jon) Williams, and Rick, his uncle Jack; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ted, being social in nature, with an enormous friend base, was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1991, where he was very active as a mentor and sponsor. He volunteered for the former Compass House, where he was Chairman of the Board. He was presently board president of the Road to Hope Foundation House. Ted was a counselor for Lorain County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, serving inmates in local prisons. He was a long-time member of the Oberlin Golf Club and a member of the Amherst Noon Day Golf Club.
Family will receive friends Sunday, December 30, 2012 from 4 - 8 p.m., at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. The funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, at Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ, 379 South Main St., Amherst. Pastor Attila Szemesi will officiate. Burial with military rites conducted by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Community Foundation of Lorain County, Memo: the Road to Hope Fund @ 9080 Leavitt Road, Elyria, OH 44035 (440-984-7390), or online at www.peoplewhocare.org.

From a very young age, Teddy was a neighbor, cherished friend and little brother growing up on Walnut Drive. He was sweet, kind and funny as a youth. I have been gone from Amherst for quite a while but, judging from these remarks, Teddy remained that way in his adulthood and he also found a way to use his loving nature to reach out to others in need. His light will never go out.

I was deeply saddened to hear this news. Ted definitely displayed his love of life and family. I appreciated seeing him push one of the grandkids in the stroller around the Amherst ballfields and meeting with him in his trailer at the mill. He will be missed. Condolences to the Engelhardt family during this tough time.

Ted was one funny rascal. He probably had the sharpest and most perceptive sense of humor of anyone I know.
We weren't particularly close in high school, but I came to appreciate him more as we aged. Ted was very bright, extremely compassionate and kind, and never desirous of recognition for his many good deeds. He LOVED his children and grandchildren.
The world will be a little darker now without Ted.

We are going to miss you greatly. I feel as though I've lost a brother. All those years of playing golf at Oberlin on Thursday evening. I looked forward to you and Jon coming to Florida every winter and staying with me for a week. I know one of your greatest pleasures was to take a few dollars from me on the golf course. I'm going to miss that. What a great example you set for the rest of us in giving so freely of your time and money for the betterment of your fellow man. God bless you my friend.

Teddy was the consumate friend. Family friends our whole lives, it strikes me the first thing I had always done when thinking of, or seeing Teddy, was to smile. His wit and sense of humor were legendary. From our days camping out in the park in junior high school, to playing golf, to hanging out at his parent's house with sister Cindy and Jon, we always shared our life experiences, told war stories about high school, family and friends, with Teddy always weaving in that rare sense of humor, and again, always laughing.
He never bragged about his good deeds. Never. And yet, he obviously brought a lot of good into this challenging world of ours.
I will miss my friend, Ted. A good man with a good soul. Love you, Buddy.
