Dear Polly and family:

We are so sorry to hear of Rick's passing. He was a kind, gentle man. A good friend to my dad, Tom, and our family. He will be missed by all. I am sure that he is in heaven, with all his old buddies who have gone before him.Our deepest sympathy, the Thomas Fultz family.

I spent a lot of time on the phone with Rick in his later years, working hard to get him a much-deserved place in the NFL Hall of Fame. I got to know him very well. I can say without reservation that he was the most humble, generous, kind, honest and caring person I have ever come in contact with. Rick excelled in everything he did all this life, from athletics to life itself. The one thing he was very best at was being a great human being. Thankfully, I told him that while he was still with us. Rest in peace, Rick, if you can get away from the field.

I met Mr Casares a few months ago, it was one of the most eye opening encounters I have ever had. Strong willed, intelligent. It was my pleasure to meet a man of his stature. Famous but so approachable and down to earth. To his wife and family I send me deepest condolences, he will be greatly missed.

Sincerely,
Greg Newton

As Tampa Natives go, Rick Casares was among the very best of the best. The greatest athlete to come out of Hillsborough County, he was All State, All American and All Pro. He was a once in a lifetime competitor who's size, speed and tenacity was exceeded only by his kindness, humility and grace. Ahead of his time, he is now for the ages. RIP #35, you leave behind a stadium full of admiring fans from Tampa to Chicago. The Tampa Natives Show will be dedicating a broadcast in memory of Rick.
