Charles Allyn "Al" Bender CANANDAIGUA - Charles Allyn "Al" Bender, age 89, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, after a long illness, at M. M. Ewing Continuing Care Center. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nadine "Deanne" (Ceravolo) Bender; son, Michael Bender; two daughters, Karen Bender (Gary Livent) and Fran Fox; and two grandchildren, Christopher and Elizabeth Bender. He was predeceased by three sisters, Frances Young, Betty Cote and Mary Jane Bender; brother, Lawrence Bender; and son-in-law, Jeff Fox. Al was born in Canandaigua and was the son of Harold and Mollie (Cortright) Bender. He attended Canandaigua schools. Al was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II who served in Japan after the bombing of Hiroshima. He retired in 1985 after 23 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Canandaigua. Al also worked at the VA Medical Center for 16 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, American Legion Post 256 and the Canandaigua Elks Club. Al enjoyed golfing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. Friends may call tomorrow (Wednesday) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home Inc., 47 N. Main St., Canandaigua. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 95 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School, 16 Gibson St., Canandaigua, NY 14424; or Light Hill (comfort care home), 5160 Parrish St. Ext., Canandaigua, NY 14424. I remember my mom (Ruth Excell) telling stories that mentioned Al's name. I would guess he was quite a character as Mom would laugh as she told them. My deepest sympathies to all the family. Remember the great memories-they will bring a smile to your heart.

I'm so sorry for all of you! You may not know that my dad was Al's mail route sub for many years and that Al very generously waited to retire until my dad could so that he could be #1 on Al's route. I know my dad (Charlie Johnson) would want me to express his SINCERE thanks!
