I had asked Tony shortly after his brain cancer surgery, "if you knew when you were going to die, what would you want to accomplish or do until then?" He didn't hesitate... "I would spend as much time with my daughters as I can."
I had given it some thought before I asked the question, I had been worried about Tony for sometime and the surgery added a whole new level of seriousness to my concern. I think I had a bucket list in mind or some lofty unattainable goal. I guess it was a jumble of thoughts in my head...
At that moment he answered, I was in awe. Right after brain surgery, he had such clarity of thought and purpose. After a short pause, I said "that is possibly the nicest thing I have ever heard." I have thought about that moment often over the last year and am still in awe and it is still one of the most thoughtful things I have ever heard.
Tony lived for nearly a year after that moment and he made every effort to spend as much time with his daughters as he could. And, in the end, I am saddened by the loss of my friend but deeply moved that he fulfilled his life's wish.
He was such a great friend but this moment always will mean to me that he was a caring dad and a great person.
You will always be my brother. Love Bob
