Mervin Baxter Obituary

Mervin R. Baxter

AGE: 63 • Martinsville

Mervin R. Baxter, 63, died Sunday, November 11, 2012, at Overlook Hospital, Summit. Born March 22, 1949, in Middlesex, he was the son of Mervin W. and Bertha Stocker Baxter. He was a lifelong Martinsville resident. A 1967 graduate of Ridge High School, Merv received a BS in Entomology from the University of Georgia in 1972. In 1999, Merv married Maureen O'Connor of Elizabeth, his longtime sweetheart of 11 years, in the Virgin Atlantic Lounge at Newark Airport. Their honeymoon train trip through Europe was just one of several trips to exotic destinations they enjoyed together over the years. A self starter and hard worker, Merv founded MRB Pest Control, which he owned and continued as its president for over 30 years until his semi-retirement in 2008. Merv had many interests in addition to travel, including music and custom made boots. However, nothing compared to his exceptionally beautiful gardens that featured as its centerpiece a large pond that he hand dug and personally selected every single rock for its walls —it was always an ongoing art project. Merv was a man of integrity and honor. In 1987 he received a certificate of honor award from the City of Somerville for saving the life of a man who suffered an epileptic seizure and fell into the deep end of the local YMCA pool.

Merv is survived by his wife, Maureen; his " Favorite" mother in law, Ann O'Connor; sisters in law and their husbands, Lou and Brigid Bani, Chris and Annie Burd; brother in law, Michael and his dear friend Diane; nieces, Cara, Brianna, and Caity; nephews, Andrew, Michael and Connor and Uncle Dan. He is also survived by his dear lifelong friends, Bruce Major, Bob and Fran Barbeiri, Josie and Jim McCue, Meredith and John Holly, Barbara Epprecht and Rich Mager, Nancy and Bud Clifton, and so many other dear friends that were an important part of his life.

The Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, November 15, at Hagan-Chamberlain Funeral Home, 225 Mountain Avenue, Bound Brook. Interment will be at Bound Brook Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home 5:00-9:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 14th.

Not sure what to say?

Maureen
My name is Robert Olliff. You do not know me. I went to Athens this past weekend to the Georgia/Tennessee football game. While I was walking the campus I started thinking about a roommate that I had as a freshman and sophomore. That roommate was Merv. When I returned home I googled his name and was very saddened to see his obituary. He and I were so different but we became very close friends. I truly regret not staying in touch. I have very few friends in my life that were as close as Merv. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Maureen,

I was searching through facebook for old boyfriends and typed in Merv's name and unfortunately came across this. I was dating Merv when he opened up his business, living in Raritan. He had a beautiful dog named Sir whom he loved more then life itself. I shared many experiences with Merv over the four years we spent together. I could still treat a house for termites if I had to! He taught me a lot about things I never thought I'd care to learn. Merv was a fun guy. He had a great sense of humor and I didn't know anyone who didn't like him. I was truly sorry to hear of his passing. But he's back with Sir probably having the time of his life. My condonlences. Laurie Setzer California

Maureen,
I was a neighbor and classmate of Merv's at Ridge High School. We spent many mornings driving to school together in my car once we were "too cool" to take the bus. I was sorry to hear of his death. He was a really good guy.

Moe,
We cannot express the sorrow we feel for your loss. Merv was a great uncle and a close friend. As a devout music lover there is a song that is fitting, since we always gathered as a family during every holiday season to share time and stories together:
"To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to reap" Many fond memories.
We will forever miss him.
Love,
Brigid and Lou

Through the years we've shared many memories with you, about hunting, fishing, and singing the blue. When you left us we lost something inside, to bad we never had the chance to strip the wild hog of its hide. Much like the muskrat being stripped of its pelt, we surely understand the pain you must have felt. Now you carry your legacy to the greatest pond of all, in Heaven you'll find the greatest waterfall. Your words of wisdom, helping hands and life stories, will forever be with us in our hearts and in glory. Now it is time for us to say our final goodbye, we will forever miss you, from the Guys.
