Alice Dent Obituary

Alice M. Dent Naples, FL

Alice Goodale Dent of Naples, FL passed away peacefully at home with family at her bedside on December 12, 2013 at the age of 90.

She was born in Richfield Springs, NY to Roger Cassius and Mabel (Baltzell) Goodale who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death in 1980 by her husband of 31 years, William F. Dent and ten of her twelve siblings.

She is survived by her five children, Connie (Jack) Stanley of Port Charlotte FL, Marjorie Dent of Richfield Springs, NY, William Dent Jr. of Valley Cottage, NY, Gerry (Mark) Johnson of Kernersville, NC and Ginger (Jimmy) Packman of Naples, FL; six grandchildren, Jaycie and Ric Rappold, Francis and Alice Leonard, Liam Dent and Jimmy Packman; and three greatgrandchildren; in addition to her dear sister, Ginger Fassett of Port Orange, FL; and her brother, Roger Goodale of Barstow, CA.

Alice was a strong, kind, loving, and independent woman dedicated to her family and to helping others. At a young age, she worked in a factory for a year to save money for nursing school. She graduated from Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and served as an Army Nurse Cadet during WWII. During that time she met and married her loving husband and made lifelong friendships.

Her career included working as an OR nurse in NYC and a charge nurse of various Medical/Surgical units. During this time she became a Deacon at her church and a Girl Scout Leader. She went on to get her bachelors degree while raising her five children and became a School Nurse/ Health Educator before moving to Naples FL. She became the Director of Nursing for Heritage Healthcare during which time they received an 'A' rating.

In retirement she was active in community service, doing triage at the NCH ER. She volunteered at the Senior Friendship Center and the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary. She gave generously to the VFW and DAV.

A small prayer service was held at the Hospice House Campus on December 13, 2013 and a memorial service is planned for the Spring of 2014 in Richfield Springs, NY where she will be buried next to her husband.

Our Mother was an avid reader and was known as the peacekeeper of the family who kept us together after we lost our Father. She practiced what she preached. She was an excellent role model for her children and grandchildren. She was loved by her friends, family, and caregivers. We would like to especially thank Laura Steele, RN, Linda Mitchell, RN, Janie Garfias, HHA and Daniel Riggs, SW and Chaplain Elaine Thomas of Avow Hospice, Naples in addition to her special Home Instead Senior Care caregivers Toni and Heidi.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans (http://www.dav.org/) or the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in NY State.

Her love of family and bright spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

Aunt Alice was truly a wonderful, kind and caring person. One of the biggest accomplishments anyone can hope for during their time on this earth is to touch people and make a difference. In that regard, Aunt Alice was a huge and resounding success. Her courage, faith, and strength throughout her life is a shining example to all of us.
The memories I cherish the most are taken from our many family gatherings and her and her siblings laughter. Their sense of humor carried through to all of them and it will be Aunt Alice's smiling eyes and laughter I will have in my heart.
My thoughts are with all her family.

Alice and I were volunteers at the Senior Friendship Center, and she made me aware of how a true nurse cares for the sick, needy, and some times friendless. What an inspiration! Carol
