Hands down the most intrigueing and inspiring teacher ive had the pleasure of knowing. I consider myself so very fortunate to have had the oppurtinity to learn and share in Mrs. Shea's classrom at Lely. She not only made English entertaining, but she brought out the best in every student that was willing to give their best efforts in the classroom. You will forever be missed and loved! Thank You for everything Mrs. Shea....My life will forever be influenced by your transcendentalist way of thinking.

We have lost a gifted teacher and an inspiring human being. Thank you, Joyce, for believing in the students of Lely High School. You could have taught almost anywhere. You chose to plant your flag in East Naples and never looked back. You will be missed.

Ms. Shea made quite an impact on my daughter during her time at Lely High School. She was such an inspiration to so many students. Everyone should have a special teacher that inspires you....as she did for so many. She took the time to find the special talents in each and encourage them. How wonderful to make such an impact on so many lives.
My sympathy to the family of Ms. Shea.

Bill: Words cannot express the sadness we feel at the loss of our wonderful friend Joyce. To say that she will be missed is an understatement. Joyce touched so many lives in her short time here and we recently witnessed the love her students had for her the night we all went to hear Dr. Ben Carson speak and while at dinner, two of her former students came over to her and, there were plenty of hugs and kisses. She was so happy to see them. This has happened many, many times. She was loved by all who were fortunate to know her. Joyce leaves a wonderful legacy. We have many memories of the times we have spent together - these are the memories we will always cherish and keep close to our hearts. She was a loyal and loving friend and an amazing woman. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

This beautiful woman is the reason I became excited about writing and poetry and I will forever be grateful! She was always such a fun, funny, kind hearted and sweet spirited lady with an amazing smile that would light up the classroom and halls when I attended Lely. My heart goes out to her family and friends for their loss of this precious angel! She truly was an angel on earth and now God has given her heavenly angel wings.

To know her was to love her. The impact of her positive presence is global and her guidance...always authentic. What a beautiful soul. Thank you Mrs. Shea! You were an inspiration to so many!

All who knew her were enriched by her spirit of life, living and learning. I have special memories and moments involving Joyce that will always be special to me, more so now than ever. To her family I say I'm terribly sorry for your loss, to my classmates I say remember how lucky we were to have such an inspired motivating individual in our lives at such an impressionable age.
I feel a terrible loss in her passing. God bless her spirit.

Ms.Shea truly was the total package as a teacher. She understood that to impact kids you have to build relationships. What a legacy to leave impacting 1000's of young adults and inspiring people like to me get into teaching. I hope to leave my name remembered like Ms.Shea did at every school she taught.

The 'hood' had lost a bright star and the world has lost a wonderful woman. I'll miss the waves and chuckles from across the street, her emails and hysterical political satire. Rest in peace, Joyce. You've earned it.

I am so devastated to hear of this. I was a student in her 1998 honors English class, her "golden apple" year. However, myself and her students knew she did not need a golden apple to prove what a smart, insightful, and exemplary teacher she was." She truly loved what she did and it emanated from her. She had a knack for making every lesson exciting and truly, truly cared about every one of her students. She would read the newspaper every day and upon seeing something related to one of her students, clip the article and put it on her classroom bulletin board for all to see. She was also extremely kind, never being too stern and only asking truant students for an extra cookie to be given to her when they walked in with one. I will never forget her and cherish the time I spent with her. I still remember words of wisdom that she would give me after class when I would be stressed about numerous assignments in my classes. Her words, "everything always gets done" have still echoed in my mind after all of these years.

Ms. Shea and I were really close. She was an inspiration to me, and was one of the reasons I eventually changed careers to become a teacher. She was a beautiful lady, inside and out, and had one of the best minds I have ever encountered. I often thought of her over the years, and I am saddened by the news. What a cool person, and I'm glad I had a chance to know her and be taught by her. Teachers always say that if they can change even one student, they have done their job. Well, she did that for me, so Ms. Shea, you succeeded.

I'm very sad to hear of Joyce's passing. She was a friend and colleague at PLHS during the 70s. We played racquetball together. Joyce and I codirected the Spring musical "Guys and Dolls". She was full of fun, a great teacher and a wonderful person. So happy to read about the wonderful life and family that she had. Rest in Peace Joyce. You were so loved at Pompton High.

So sad to hear this . . . Mrs P. was one of those 'rare' teachers; always happy and bubbly and enthusiastic, and who challenged and shared, encouraged and mentored for success; she was one who truly 'made a difference' for many; one of which was me.

May she rest in piece and continue to smile down upon her family and loved ones, as well as all those students and others who's lives she has touched throughout the years !!!

I wanted to get in touch with Ms. Shea for some time. She had had such an enormous impact on my life. I'll always remember her Honors Lit class. She was my favorite teacher. And now that I read her obituary I realize how much I've followed in her footsteps. I'm also an English teacher and I teach in Vietnam and I've traveled much of Asia like she did. I wish I had gotten in contact with her sooner to exchange stories. She will be greatly missed by me and many of her students.

There are a few people who make lasting impressions; Mrs. P was one of them. On my desk in my office I still have the paperback copy of the Webster's dictionary she gave me my senior year. Inside the cover she wrote a note encouraging me to become a better speller. She loved to teach. I am sorry to hear of her passing. She will be missed.

She was such a passionate person--the world is surely slightly dimmer without her in it. She inspired such a love of literature in me, through her sheer enthusiasm of the subject. She was the best teacher I ever had the pleasure of knowing.

There are a few teachers we come across in our school lives that will forever be remembered. Mrs. P as we called her in Pompton Lakes was one that will always be remembered. She was young when she was teaching here in Pompton Lakes but she shined. You could easily feel how much she loved her work and her students. Rest in peace Mrs. P - you will never be forgotten.
