Edward J Barber Naples, FL

Edward J. Barber, of Naples, FL passed away August 30, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He leaves his loving wife, Barbara; children, Shelli (Tom) Norei ka, Julie (Thomas) Rooney and Leslie Barber; sisters, Mary Jane Calnan and Ginny (Joe) Marria; grandchildren, Garrett, Dustin and Rebecca Waldron, Victoria and Thomas Rooney and Evan Elkins, who lovingly called him 'fireman Ed.'

Ed was predeceased by his parents; as well as his brother, David; and sister, Sally.

Ed leaves many friends and family who he loved dearly, including Scott Morcaldi, Leslie Bernauer, Kristin and Michael Elkins.

Ed served in the US military during the Korean Conflict. He was a firefighter in Torrington, CT for 28 years and was a courageous officer in the fire department, receiving many accommodations for his rescue efforts.

Ed was also an outstanding and talented athlete who played semi-pro basketball as well as being an avid golfer and tennis player. He was passionate about the St Louis Cardinals baseball team and had an amazing knowledge of players, statistics and the sports world. Ed was very patriotic and loved his country. He was never without an American flag pinned to his lapel. Ed was a faithful parishioner of St Agnes Catholic Church in Naples. He was known for his sharp wit and his fun sense of humor. Hundreds of cards and messages that Ed has received, since the onset of his illness, are a testament to his kindness and thoughtfulness to others.

A memorial mass will be held 11:00 a.m, Saturday, September 21, 2013 at St Agnes Catholic Church, 7775 Vanderbilt Beach Rd Naples, FL 34120.

A reception will follow in the Club House at Carlton Lakes, Carlton Lakes Blvd Naples, FL.

Very sorry to hear of Ed's passing. I knew Ed from my firefighting days at Torringford Vol Fire Dept. He was one heck of a strong and determined firefighter. When I was elected Chief of Torringford, Ed was the first from "downtown" to call and congratulate me. We got along very well in those days of career / volunteer relationships. My Dad and Eddy served for years together at the TFD. As a kid I looked up these guys, especially Eddy. To me Eddy was larger than life, a mans man. Althought I haven't seen him in years, I'll miss him. Just knowing Eddy no longer walks this earth saddens me. Go in peace my friend.
