Mel was my stepfather and I knew him from a young age. The heart of a good man is revealed through the choices he makes. To be the father he didn't have to be to myself and my 2 brothers, shows what a good and kind man Mel was. He did his best by us, worked hard to provide for us and never made us feel any different when his natural children came along. Thank you Mel for all you did for us. Rest in Peace now xx

I started work in the Pukeuri Freezing Works freezing chambers in late 1968. I met Mel around this time when he started work in the freezing chambers. We used to ride share to and from the works to Oamaru. Mel had a cool looking blue Ford V8 coupe of 40s vintage. It had no fan belt and i suspect no working water pump so we had to carry a water supply to top up the radiator with us. Mel was a good worker and very easy to get along with. I met his parents through picking him up for work.
My condolences to his family and friends at this time. Kindest regards and thoughts.
