Allan Nye, of Ormond Beach, died Sunday, March 23, 2014. He was born in Boston, Mass on May 5, 1922. He grew up in Cedarhurst, Long Island, New York. At age 13, his family moved to Montreal, Canada. Allan attended Sir George Williams and McGill Colleges. He worked for Trans-Canada Airlines until returning to the States to enlist in the American Service. Allan was with the 5307th Composite Unit-Mars Task Force in Burma, the official designation of the Ranger-style group led by Brigadier General Frank D. Merrill, AKA "Merrills Maurauders". This unit confronted brutal fighting in malarial jungles against much larger Japanese forces. Allan was dubbed a Hero when without regard for his own safety, he pulled a wounded soldier out from under the cross-fire of two Jap pill boxes. He bravely earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star in World War II. In 2012, Congressman Bill Young interviewed Allan on his experience in the service. This interview has been preserved in the Library of Congress and in May of 2012, when Allan was 90 years old, Congressman Young presented Allan with a U.S. flag that was flown over the Capital on 9/11 in his honor. Allan began his career in the wholesale, retail business when he became a buyer in New York with the Gertz Department Store, part of Allied Stores. He returned to Florida and became a traveling representative for Stacey Ames and later, Forever Young Woman's clothing lines. He also was the General Manager for Doliner's Hotel Gift stores in Daytona Beach. Allan always knew that there was no one in the world who loved his family more than he did. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 64 years, Marilyn, whom he met on a blind date in Daytona Beach; his son, Glenn Nye (Madge); daughter, Debbie Sembler (Brent); four grandchildren, Tayllor Sembler, Logan Sembler, Preston Sembler and Gregory Nye; his 96 year old brother, Irv and many relatives who loved him dearly. Memorial donations may be made to either Temple Israel or the Jewish Federation. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Temple Israel. Interment will follow at Mount Sinai Cemetery.
