This is very belated. I just found this on Facebook. My brother, Scott Ellington(Class of '62) was greatly influenced by him as were so many others. He and Scotty are reminiscing now. God Bless you.

I have no more fonder or respectful memory of my student experience than J. Louis Schlegel III.
It is with deep regret that we received the word of the passing of our friend Mr. Schlegel. He was one of the best and we loved to work and play for him in the Bay High Band. We will remember him as long as we live.
Love and Prayers,
Grady(Classof 1958)and Beth(Class of 1959)Broxton
Our sincere condolences to the Schlegel family. He was loved and admired!
My condolences to the family. As many others have said, Mr. Schlegel made our high school memories very special. He was a great band director and gave the Million Dollar Band a big name due to his leadership.
Thank God I got to tell him, (at the 50th renunion) that he influenced my life more than any other teacher or professor had. I loved that man.
I have fond memories of Mr. Schlegel at Bay High. He was admired and respected by us band members; and encouraged me to pursue a personal goal I had. He was a wonderful man.
I have great memories of Mr. Schlegel and the Bay High School Million Dollar Band, 1959-1962. Mr. Schlegel was a great band director and person!
A good friend of my parents, Tom and Dorothy Person at Bay High, he was a tremendous band director and as I read here, went on to do great things with his life. He will be missed.
Lee Person, '64 Bay High
My sympathies to the Schlegel family. Some of my best high school memories are of JLS III and the Bay High Million Dollar Band.
I guess God needed a band director. I am so glad he waited to take ours -- a guy who brought so much pleasure to so many -- so glad he loaned him to us for awhile. Good-bye, CHIEF!
He was a great influence on my life. Being in the "Million Dollar Band" with Mr. Schlegel are my best memories of high school, 1957-1960, touring south Florida one year, touring the beautiful "blue grass" of Kentucky my senior year and seeing my hearts desire, the fantastic horse farms and seeing several Kentucky Derby winners. Mr. Schlegel was someone you would never forget for the way he impacted all our lives
When I look back on my time in the band I
always reflect on the times we use to put
J.Louie's VW on his porch. One of lifes
great moments, being in the presenve of
such a fine man.We love you J.LOUIE,
My thoughts are an echo of those already written (especially Beth's). Three years with J Louie shaped my future (Class of '65). '64 Worlds Fair among the best. Studied music at Stetson in large part because of him. There were a continuing stream of music students at Stetson nearly every year before and after my time there because of his influence. J Louie is a prime example of the life long impact a great teacher can have on many of their students. Its gratifying to know he lived a full, vibrant, rich and enjoyable life. "Thanks for the memories and inspiration, J Louie" Art Kimbrough, Marianna
There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about Mr Schlegel. I was in his band from 1960-64. He has been a big influence in my life, he gave me a love of music. You will continue to live in my heart. Thank You.
On my list of favorite memories from high school, I respected and admired him.
A man I respected greatly. He was very special. I was Band Captain in 1963 so he and I were close.
The words will not come to me to express how I feel at this moment.
He is the reason I finished high school and will always have a place in my heart.
rip such a fine man, fun, entertaining, and great teacher!!!
A great teacher and musician who shared his talent with so many of us.
My absolute favorite high school teacher !! A man with real class! RIP Mr. Schlegel !!
"Schlegel" was the best teacher I EVER had at Bay High. Definitely the most fun!
Special memories include: 1964 Worlds Fair, summer marching practice on the beach at the Jetties, State Band Competition, and the most wonderful laugh--I can still hear it. It wasn't until I tried teaching for a while, that I really appreciated how many special thing he did with us. I'll always love him and miss him. Beth Heidelberg, class of '66.
The best music man ever. We still miss him. He made the Million Dollar Band worth that name.
My prayers go out to Mr. Schlegel's family. A really great man and band director. He held the members of the "Million Dollar Band" to a high standard - and we loved every minute of it!
I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Schlegel's passing. He helped us create memories that will last a lifetime. The "Million Dollar Band" will always hold a special place in my high school memories.
He is now the brightest star in the musical heavens.
A wonderful role model for everyone who knew him. A giant among men. It was an honor for me to be in his life for those few years. He was a great inspiration to me.

To the family of J Louis Schlegel III I grieve with you. This man was a very large part of my high school years. He meant a lot to me and gave me lessons and opportunities that I would not have gotten to experience otherwise. I graduated in 1965 and he was my Opus. When I saw that movie it brought back lots of memories of him.
Hello Lucinda and Jay. I am sorry to hear about the passing of Uncle Sonny. Both he and Aunt Josephine will forever hold a very special place in my heart. I hope the two of you are well and your families are healthy. God bless you! Bridget
