J. SCHLEGEL Obituary

J Louis Schlegel III passed on July 2, 2013 at the age of 86. Born in Kentucky, he graduated from Millersburg Military Institute and joined the Navy to protect America in World War II. He graduated from Stetson University and spent 20 years conducting the Bay High School band in Panama City, FL. Then he decided to obtain his Masters In Humanities from FSU and spent 20 more years teaching at Valencia State College in Orlando. He had many notable accomplishments including Department Chairman, co-author of 7 college textbooks and as a consultant for the National Endowment of Humanities. He developed the Honors Program, an interdisciplinary study which is still in existence today. He loved his beautiful wife of 53 years, Josephine Parker from New Smyrna. They are survived by their two children, J Louis IV and Lucinda Nelson. J Louis eventually moved back to DeLand after retirement and demonstrated exemplary civic leadership, from Commodore at Lake Beresford Yacht Club to President of the Oaks, where he resided. He spent the next 10 years traveling with his devoted Eloise Over as they traveled the United States and oceans, mastered square dancing and performed tambourine acts for the community. His wonderful memories also include his other survivors, Eloise; sister Sherry Madsen; and four grandchildren: Travis, J Louis V, Jeffrey and Erica; as well as many nephews and nieces. A private celebration of life was held with immediate family members.

Not sure what to say?

I think of Mr. Schelgel every time I sign my name, have things addressed to "R" or have someone or some form demand that I use my first name. It even upsets me that he is referred to here as "J". I was, is and always be "Mr Schlegel" one of the finest people it has been my pleasure to know.

It is with deep regret that we received the word of the passing of our friend Mr. Schlegel. He was one of the best and we loved to work and play for him in the Bay High Band. We will remember him as long as we live.

A good friend of my parents, Tom and Dorothy Person at Bay High, he was a tremendous band director and as I read here, went on to do great things with his life. He will be missed.

I guess God needed a band director. I am so glad he waited to take ours -- a guy who brought so much pleasure to so many -- so glad he loaned him to us for awhile. Good-bye, CHIEF!

He was a great influence on my life. Being in the "Million Dollar Band" with Mr. Schlegel are my best memories of high school, 1957-1960, touring south Florida one year, touring the beautiful "blue grass" of Kentucky my senior year and seeing my hearts desire, the fantastic horse farms and seeing several Kentucky Derby winners. Mr. Schlegel was someone you would never forget for the way he impacted all our lives

My thoughts are an echo of those already written (especially Beth's). Three years with J Louie shaped my future (Class of '65). '64 Worlds Fair among the best. Studied music at Stetson in large part because of him. There were a continuing stream of music students at Stetson nearly every year before and after my time there because of his influence. J Louie is a prime example of the life long impact a great teacher can have on many of their students. Its gratifying to know he lived a full, vibrant, rich and enjoyable life. "Thanks for the memories and inspiration, J Louie" Art Kimbrough, Marianna

"Schlegel" was the best teacher I EVER had at Bay High. Definitely the most fun!
Special memories include: 1964 Worlds Fair, summer marching practice on the beach at the Jetties, State Band Competition, and the most wonderful laugh--I can still hear it. It wasn't until I tried teaching for a while, that I really appreciated how many special thing he did with us. I'll always love him and miss him. Beth Heidelberg, class of '66.

To the family of J Louis Schlegel III I grieve with you. This man was a very large part of my high school years. He meant a lot to me and gave me lessons and opportunities that I would not have gotten to experience otherwise. I graduated in 1965 and he was my Opus. When I saw that movie it brought back lots of memories of him.
