It's Been a Year Matthew, A thousand times we needed you
A thousand times we cried
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died
A heart of gold stopped beating
two twinkling eyes closed to rest
God broke our hearts to prove, He only took the best
Never a day goes by that you're not in our hearts.

I still remember having talks with you about discipline and new soldiers, pacing down the sidewalk behind the battery toward our cars well after the sun had set a little over a year ago. I can't find the words to describe the void left by hearing of your death. One of my brothers I lived, worked, slept, and served with for over 6 years. Everything I try to write just feels cheap in comparison to the effect you had on everyone around you. You are missed and loved, brother. Rest in peace.

Matt, we didn't know each other particularly well. We weren't best friends. But you were probably the most recognizable face around 1-7. You always had a smile and a joke and on an occasion or two tried to cheer me up when I was going through hell. All I can say is, the world is a little darker for not having you around anymore.

My deepest sympathies to you all in this tragic time, the death of a brave soldier.

My son was one of the six killed in his unit. You are blessed that you had more time with him following his selfless service to our country. God bless you in your time of grief.

Matthew,As the God fearing man that I am, I know it is not proper to question God with the choices He makes. I can only trust in my faith and leave you in God's hands. This is a very painful experience for us all, especially your dad. Matt go and do your duties with God as this is an unbroken chain of love that you, your dad and I share. So don't worry Dale and I have your "DADS BACK"!! Matt, I was with you when you where born 27 years ago. I have been proud to be apart of your life and enjoy the happy times we have shared as a family. As you became a young man you joined the Army and became one of the best soldiers our country has to offer. I am very proud of you and the soldier you are! Matt, I LOVE YOU! Uncle Dennis

I am Matt's Dad and tried to place a brief entry last night but I may not have done something correctly since I do not see the post. The loss of my son is almost unbearable and if you log onto the Lankford Funeral Home site in Deland,Fl you can read my personal message to my son and only child. Please understand that I am in so much pain right now but want to thank everyone for their kind words and support during the most difficult time in my life. Today and tomorrow will be the worst. I loved Matthew with all my heart and sole and can't imagine having to live on without him. He was my pride and joy. I thank you all.

God has new Angel in Heaven. Mere words cannot express the depth of my heartfelt condolences to Jody and his family. Find strength in God, family and friends during this very difficult time. If there is anything we can do, please let us know. We will be right there. Sonja and Alexis Wiles
