It is with great sadness that the Wichman family announces the death of Michael Arthur Wichman on December 11, 2012. Mike was a native Daytonian, born on December 14, 1954 to Herman Arthur and Mary Sutton Wichman. Mike graduated Seabreeze High School in 1973, participated in the Seabreeze Marching Band and worked with the Volusia County Beach Patrol as a lifeguard. After high school, Mike joined the army in 1973, serving his country with a tour of about 2 years in Munich, Germany. After being honorably discharged, Mike worked for the Volusia County Sheriff's department as a dispatcher, road deputy, SWAT team member, school resource officer, and Judge Patrick Kennedy's bailiff. In 1985 he met his wife of 25 years, Kathy and started a different part of his life. Together they shouldered good times & bad raising some wonderful children. After retiring from the VCSO with 34 years employment, Mike took on his retirement time with joy. He developed a new appreciation for his free time-frequently going out with his fishing buddy, Pat Green; kayaking with Kathy through the springs, hiking in the Ocala National Forest and playing bass guitar with the members of the Bonazolli Band, both on stage and in the "band room". Mike is survived by his wife, Kathy; and children Cameron Alexander, Michelle Kristine, Jennifer Dixon, along with her husband, Dwayne Dixon, and Sean A. Wichman; his uncle Jack Sutton (Jakin, GA), his wife, Betty and cousins Angela Musselwhite and Shannon Crumbaugh. Some of Mike's greatest joy came from playing and teaching his grandchildren, Gunner James Dixon and Mia Noelle Dixon, lessons of life. A memorial service will be held 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 18th, at the First United Methodist Church, 336 South Halifax Drive in Ormond Beach. In lieu of flowers , memorial donations can be made to the "100 Deputies/100 Kids" charity c/o Volusia County Sheriff's Dept., 123 W. Indiana Avenue, Deland, FL 32724.

Mike was a very close friend from back in the day when we were teenagers in Daytona Beach. His enthusiasm, smile and energy always made him a joy to know. He was truly one of the good guys. I'll never forget you, Mike.

Think a lot about Mike these days. We made it fun while working together at the S.O. Mike always had my six when working with him. His wit made the job easier to bare. Glad to have gotten to see him perform his music which he loved and hear about his family that he love so much. Great Man and Great Friend!

I am glad that Mike, Pat and I reconnected after all these years. He had e-mailed me thru the years and we stayed in touch through the internet. It was good to finally get to hang out with him again.I am especially glad I went to listen to Mike play what was his last concert in St. Augustine. Mike was a good friend and a good LEO. I will miss Mike's jokes and his laughter. He was very proud of his family and loved them very much. God Speed my Friend!

I graduated high school with Mike and continued to cross paths with him in the law enforcement community over the past 30+ years. One thing that comes to mind when I hear his name is his infectious smile. My condolences to his family during this difficult time. May the sad moments soon be replaced by the great memories.

I am just astounded at the news of Mike's passing. I just saw and spoke to him last week in the Courthouse Annex. He seemed so happy about retiring and spoke about the pleasure he was getting of playing in the band.
He now stands before the "Master Band Leader". It is the prayer of my family to your's that God hold you close and see to your safety.

Kathy and Michelle (and family):
Mike was a special man and gave of himself so freely every year for the 100 Deputies program. He will be missed not only by me but also by the many whose lives he touched. My memories of him will include the last two events I shared with him: shopping trips to Walmart and bike building at the Fairgrounds. I am so sorry for your loss and pray for you as your family is healing.

Mike and I go way back to early Lifeguard days along with the Army Reserves in Daytona Beach..plus he was a fellow deputy sheriff.....not to mention our close neighbor. He was so much fun to be around but more importantly he was always there to help Linda and I at the ranch. Either by fixing things or feeding our animals while we were away....I will never forget my friend...prayers are with Kathy and the family now during this most difficult time....a lot of tears have been shed recently by us!
