Jo Rountree Obituary

Jo Rountree

Sunbury

Jo Loy Rountree, 72, of 226 Folly Road, died Saturday, March 7, 2015 in her home where she was surrounded by her family.

Born in Portsmouth, VA on September 18, 1942, she was the daughter of Ursula Loy of Greenville, NC and the late William Loy, Sr. The Salutatorian of her class at Liberty High School in Liberty, NC, she enrolled at the Watts Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1963. In 1976 she was in the first graduating class from the East Carolina University Nurse Practitioner School. After completing her education there, she worked for a brief time in the health department. Later she was contacted by Dr. Alfred Moncla saying he wanted her to work with him and it was there she worked for 23 years. Jo once stated she loved her job so much she may would consider doing it for free. Her two heroes in her life of nursing were Drs. Robert Poston and Alfred Moncla. They both trained and taught her and she always said they made her what she had become. She was so thankful that they both had faith in her and her abilities. Well respected by both the public and the medical community in the Elizabeth City area, she said the "zenith" of her career was when she had a female medical doctor coming from South America twice a year to see her for her medical checkups.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Loy, Jr.

Surviving besides her mother is her husband of 51 years, Earl Rountree; their two children, Wendy Rountree Boyce and husband Kevin, and Scott Rountree and wife Ruth, all of Hobbsville; her brother, Eric Loy of Greenville; and by her two greatest loves, her grandson Victor William Rountree, and her dog, Mattie.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Cameron Currin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, or in the social hall of the church immediately following services on Tuesday.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I have been in CA for the past two weeks and didn't know of her passing until today. She was my PA at Women's Clinic until she retired. I LOVED her. Her kindness, caring, insight, and skill made me look forward to my yearly visits. I never made an appointment with the doctor after my first meeting with her. She was wonderful! My heart is with you.

My God lift you all up and strengthen you in the days and time to come!! She will be your special star always watching and loving you!! Thanks Mrs Jo for helping me be better at my job and ejecting the tapes when they were full of letting them beep all weekend ;-)
