Joan Medley McCarthy, 87, of Fuquay Varina, formerly of Cary, died Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Windsor Point Retirement Community.
Joan was born November 2, 1927 in Walden, NY to the late Edward Whitehead Millspaugh and Elsie Medley Millspaugh. She was a graduate of Bryant University in Smithfield, RI and worked in the US State Department and White House. Joan held many positions and traveled extensively during her work with the State Department retiring as a Foreign Service Staff Officer. She was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Edward Joseph McCarthy; brother, Charles W. Millspaugh and his wife, Elaine of Fort Lauderdale, FL; nephew, Mark Millspaugh and his wife, Sarah, and their 3 children of Baltimore, MD.
A "Celebration of Life" Service will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, 11:00 AM at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Apex. Visitation with the family will be held from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at the "Gathering Space", in the front entrance of the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Mr. McCarthy, I heard the sad news of Joan's passing. I am so terribly sorry for your loss. It was my privilege to be her nurse. May God bless and keep you.

Dear Ed, My deepest sympathy on the loss of Joan.
So many good memories of her and the first that comes to mind is the impeccable appearance she always brought and her wonderful giggle--just like her mother. She was such a bright spot in all of our lives. You and Joan are always in my prayers.
