My deepest sympathies to the Meares family. I never met Mr. Meares but I know Paul from his years with A. E. Finley and through the Wolfpack Club.

It makes me smile to remember my father, Jimmy Ray, and Patches fooling around and joking with each other! and it still touches me to remember him visiting Daddy when he was at Mayview, remembering the person my father was. What a bright light Patches was in the Raleigh community~he shone on everyone! He enriched my parents' lives and I'm sure all who knew him. I feel grateful to have known such a noble soul. You must miss him terribly. He was one of a kind.

Patches Meares was a generous supporter of the library at NC State, and he and Dot graced so many of our events with their warmth, elegance, and charm. Patches joined the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Library, and he was a beloved director.

He epitomized the very best of NC State and was such a great ambassador for the university. No one loved and appreciated State more!

His love for Dot and his family impressed and inspired us all.

I admit to being absolutely crazy about him. He has to be the most handsome and charming graduate of the university!

The Friends of the Library will remember him by engraving his name on one of the bricks leading into D. H. Hill Library. He will never be forgotten.

My affection and condolences to Dot and the rest of the wonderful Meares Family,

Susan Nutter
Vice Provost and Director of Libraries
