First classical piano I ever heard. It was 1968 and I was six years old. I still have that tape and Van Cliburn inspired us all with his music and life. My Condolences to Mr. Cliburn's family.

I was attending Kilgore College in 1958 when Van Cliburn gave a concert on campus. He ask the audience if we wanted to hear his Competition in Moscow which would last for almost an hour, or a variety of several different pieces. Of course, the audience wanted the Competition. I sat through the performance spell bound. Thank you, Van for a wonderful memory.

He will sorely be missed I remember hearing him play at Waterloo Village in Byram Township NJ. At that concert the Doves of Peace by Bohem Pottery in Trenton NJ were on the stage with him when he played it was like this beautiful piece of porclein moved with his music, the Doves of Peace were later taken to China as a gift from the American people by President Nixon. He is playing for the angels now how lucky they are.

As a young girl I was priviledged to hear Mr. Cliburn play in my church on Sunday evening. It was like nothing I had ever hear before. He was a gracious as he was gifted. He patienly stood and listened to me as expressed how much I had enjoyed his performance. Then as was his way he encouraged me to find the gift God had given me and use it. Heaven I know rings out with sweet piano melodies today!

Van Cliburn made a tremendous difference in the world of classical piano music with his vision of the competition that bears his name. Countless young pianists will benefit from this vision, as will the listeners. I have been to the competition almost every year for many years, and plan to go again this year.

Van Cliburn's legacy and his wonderful playing will live on in our hearts. Thanks for the memories!

OSU campus in 1964. He played in an old auditorium on a chilly winter night. Rachmoninoff never sounded so beautiful. One of my favorite memories. We'll not see his like again.
