Sue, Joe, Kim and grandchildren- Before I mention my relationship with Joe let me just say that all of you were the most important element of Joe's life. He talked about you frequently and was always very, very proud of all of you. As a partner Joe was the best. I recall one incident in particular where we had responded to a fire in an industrial occupancy after the fire was out and we could see, we stood and just stared at each other as we acknowledged just how close we had come to being killed. I could fill this entry with stories about Joe and just how good he was as a firefighter but I think what stands out in my mind the most is the role Joe and Chuck Samson played in starting the fire departments "EMS service". There are many people home, celebrating the holiday season with family and friends because of what Joe did. At one point I made him and unofficial EMT. He knew as much as any EMT did and never shied away from doing what was necessary to save a life. I ate, slept and worked side by side with Joe for nine years. Joe was the one that greeted me my first night on the job. He taught me many, many things that I have never forgotten. I will miss seeing Joe "out on patrol" performing his daily checks of his beloved Branford. I don't know how much he has told you about what he did on the job but trust me, he was a great firefighter and unofficial "EMT" but most of all a dear friend. Rest assured he is in heaven watching over all of you. May God rest his soul.
