McMANUS, NEAL Neal McManus passed away on September 23, 2013. He was surrounded by family and friends praying by his bedside including his devoted wife of 45 years, Sharon Ryan McManus and his daughter Bridget McManus. Neal was born May 16, 1946 in New Haven to the late Vincent Thomas and Loretta Flynn McManus. He was the proud father of Bridget McManus of West Haven and Farrell McManus of New York, NY and his partner Richard Spatafora. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Vincent and Patricia McManus of Wallingford, his brother and sister-in-law Kevin and Diane McManus of Boling, Illinois, and his sister and brother-in-law Noeline and John Wozniak of Guilford. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Patricia Mendola and her husband Raymond of West Haven, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren. An experienced manager in the ceramic tile and marble industry, Neal retired in 2012 from Saloni Ceramica of Castillon, Spain as North American Sales Manager. While born and raised in Hamden, CT, Neal moved to West Haven in 1968, and quickly became active in West Haven's civic and community affairs. He served as Commissioner of the West Shore Fire Department from 1979-1985, and in 1980 as the president of the West Shore Fire Department Volunteers. He was an outspoken advocate for firefighters' safety and efficient delivery of emergency services to the West Shore community. During his tenure as commissioner he spearheaded the reconstruction and dedication of the Benham Hill Fire Station. Neal's family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Scott Gettinger and his medical staff at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale, who remained devoted until the very end in Neal's courageous battle against cancer. Friends may call at the West Haven Funeral Home, 662 Savin Avenue on Thursday, September 26 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the funeral home on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lawrence Church, West Haven at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven. Should friends prefer, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Neal, are welcomed to the Smilow Cancer Hospital to support the research of Dr. Scott Gettinger.
