Three weeks ago I had the privilege of spending 2 days in Ft. Knox, KY with the Essex and Kent Scottish to witness their training exercises. I came away with a huge amount of respect for the job that these young men and women are doing, and the professionalism with which they do it. They all know the stakes and risks. It sounds as if Capt. Goddard (Nichola) clearly loved her job and was committed to doing her best. Obviously she was good at what she did. I want her family to know that this Canadian appreciates the job she was doing, and if I were one of the Afghani families trying to make a better life, I would be thankful for the rest of my life that Canada cared enough to send dedicated young professionals to give me and my family the same opportunities that Canadians take for granted. Thank you Nichola.

Our deepest sympathies go out to your family and friends. As the brother of Cpl. Randy Payne who died in Afghanistan on 22 April 2006 along with 3 other Canadian Forces heroes that day, I understand what you are going through. No words can ever change what has happened, but please remember that we grieve for and with you.

She has fallen at such a young age so that others may grow old because she has made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and freedom in the world.

As I have said to my brother Randy, “Rest in eternal peace… for your work here on earth is done and you have been called to a higher place to join the army of angels where you are needed more…”

May your memories bring you comfort in the trying times ahead.

While the notion that she was the first FEMALE to die in combat is comforting to those who promote the strenght of womenhood, my gut tells me she would want to be remembered as just a soldier - male or female doesn't matter. May God claim her sole.

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

It was particularly distressing to read the news this morning and learn of the death of Capt. Nichola Goddard. I am now torn between the grief I feel over her loss, and the pride I feel for her accomplishments on behalf all Canadians.

My daugher, Lisa, spent a number of years in artillery in the reserves and has just left the army. She is teaching in Brussels and I know will be very proud of Nichola Goodard, even though we know how hard this news will be for her husband and family.

Our heartfelt thanks to a brave young soldier who stood on guard for all of us.
Deepest sympathy to her family.
