Eileen Attanasio Obituary

OAK RIDGE - Eileen K. Attanasio (Kientz) passed into eternal life on Monday, May 16, 2011, at St. Clare's Hospital in Denville, after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). She was 72 years old.

Eileen was born in Paterson to Leonard and Agnes Kientz (Caulley), where she lived and was married. After residing in Sanford, Fla., and Paterson for a short time, she moved to Oak Ridge in 1967.

Mrs. Attanasio was a retired sales clerk with Macy's and marched in their Thanksgiving Day parades as a balloon handler or a clown. She was an avid bowler and was involved earlier in life playing semi-professional women's basketball and softball. Known for her infectious smile and good nature, Eileen was a loving wife and mother, and adored her husband, children and eight grandchildren. Having a deep love and concern for all people, particularly children, she was loved by all and will be sadly missed.

She was predeceased by her brother, Leonard Keintz.

Eileen is survived by her husband of 52 years, John Attanasio, of Oak Ridge; her daughter, Eileen Patricia Attanasio and Chau Nguyen, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; her three sons, Thomas Alan and wife Linda of Branchville, John Leonard III of Kalispell, Mont., and Michael Joseph and wife Elaine of Lake Hopatcong; her brother, Larry Keintz and wife Arlene of Inverness, Fla.; her sister-in-law, Frances Keintz, of West Paterson; and her eight grandchildren, Justin, Nicole, Hunter, Michaela, John IV, Christian, Alexis and Michael II.

Friends and family are invited to Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, with burial in Florida National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions in Eileen's name be sent to Columbia University ALS Gift fund for research c/o Dr. H. Mitsumoto at The Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Research Center, Columbia University, Neurological Institute of NY, 710 West 168th St., Suite 9-007, New York, NY 10032.

I am so saddened by the loss of Eileen. My mother loved her so much and talked about her to me many times. My parents would get so excited when "The Attanasio's" visited us in Virginia Beach. My father said he really wanted us to make sure we came by when they arrived because the Attanasio's were wonderful friends and good people. My mother, Frances Stegemann, said that Eileen was my God-mother. I always remembered that especially when my mother would talk about Eileen and how she took care of my brothers and myself. Eileen and Mom laughed together over old times, dinners they tried to make as young wives and mothers and their children. I was young when we lived in Florida, but the many pictures that Eileen saved of us brought back memories. Eileen, even though she suffered with pain and illness, kept in contact with my Mom when she became very ill and was in a nursing home. Their conversations were so wonderful because it was if they just picked up where they left off. I have found comfort in knowing that they are together now and forever. I am sure that my Mom had her arms wide open in heaven for her dear friend, Eileen. I pray for peace and strength for your family. She will be missed and always loved and remembered. Thank you Eileen for everything you have done for me and my family! Thank you Attanasio's for being faithful and loyal friends to my family.

With love,

To the Attanasio family, my condolences, when I came over to hang out with the boys, Mrs. Attanasio treated me as one of her own, did my clothes when we came home from being dirty from riding, and made use lunch and dinner. She was one of the best and will be missed. I'm honored to have known her. (Robert Bachmann, Hawley, PA)
