Wallace Voreck Obituary

SPARTA - Wallace Everett Voreck Jr., 90, passed on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at 11:15 p.m. surrounded by his loving family.

He was born July 18, 1922, in Charles City, Iowa, to Wallace E. Sr. and Clara Nelson. He eventually went to University of Iowa and received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering in 1943. He then was a radio technician in the Navy on the command ship in the waters off post-war Japan until 1946. He went on to graduate studies at Stanford University in California and received his master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Tulsa, Okla., in 1948. He was then employed by Standard Oil near Chicago. Around this time, he met his wife, Ruth Casler, in a hiking and square dance group; she worked on the Manhattan project as a chemist. His career continued through oil and national defense companies. This included working at the Bikini Islands and Nevada nuclear test ranges and other important national defense projects. He had numerous patents in his name and worked on hundreds more.

He moved to Lake Mohawk in 1969, with his wife, Ruth, and three kids, to work at Picatinny Arsenal for 17 years. Lake Mohawk has been their home for 44 years. Ruth and Wally have been active members of the Mohawk Tennis Club and Newton Country Clubs and enjoyed swimming, sailing and wind surfing on the lake. They also enjoyed bridge games and church activities and were both active community members. He always loved singing in church choirs, most recently at the Sparta Methodist Church, and was a member of the Sunshine Singers.

Wallace Voreck was a true Renaissance man, who followed all the scientific issues of his time. He was a conscientious man who was a friend to all he met and proud to defend his country with the latest advances. He was always ready to lend a hand or to help a neighbor. He relaxed by working in the shop or tinkering to fix a problem around the house.

Wallace is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruth (Casler) Voreck; daughter, Marilyn Terry and her husband, Eric, of Jersey City; two sons, Rick and his wife, Diane, of Portola Valley, Calif., and Don and his wife, Rachel, of Sparta; five loving grandchildren: Paula and Austin Scheyer, and Christopher, Charlotte and Ashton Voreck.

In order to give family members time to gather, a memorial service will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Voreck residence. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to Habitat for Humanity, the Nature Conservancy or charity of choice. For more information, contact Goble Funeral Home, Sparta.
