Gayle D. Stewart born December 15, 1934 died March 19 , 2013. Age 78 of Florence, formerly of Union. Preceded in death by his parents William Floyd & Achie Stewart; his first wife Shirley Mae Davis Stewart(1993), infant son Stephen; brothers Paul, Eual, James, Howard, and Charles Stewart; and sisters Elizabeth (Robert) Osborne and Glendola (Harold) Leslie. Survived by his wife of 18 yrs., Ruie "Rae" Amburgey Collins Stewart; sisters Edith (Jesse) Lewis of Owenton and Naomi (Robert) DeYoung of West Chester, Ohio; daughters Marsha Stewart of Union and Leslie (David) Markesbery of Florence; stepsons Timothy Collins of Florence and Roger Collins of Union; stepdaughters Brenda Ferrell of Burlington, Sandra (Archie) Hardy of Florence, Donna (Terry) Fleet of Florence, Deborah Carney of Newport, Pamela (Steve) Hudgens of Burlington, Kathy Driskell of Erlanger, Connie McDine of Florence; twenty grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children out to the great-great-great-greats! Gayle opened Union barbershop in fall 1961 and the family moved to Big Bone Road in 1965. Gayle's Barbershop remained in business for 46 years until his failing health forced him to retire in 2005. During that time Gayle also earned his insurance license and began working for Gallatin County F W & L Insurance Company of Warsaw, KY as the Boone County agent. Joined Burlington Methodist Church where Gayle and Shirley became youth leaders and Gayle served as Sunday School Superintendent. Became supply pastor of the Hughes Chapel/Big Bone/East Bend Methodist Charge for seven years. During that time the Big Bone congregation added indoor plumbing and central heat; supported a youth ministry with popular softball and basketball teams; and repaired the second floor (the former space of The Odd Fellows Lodge) for use as a fellowship hall for church activities. Gayle was a Charter Member of The Florence Community Church of the Nazarene, where he remained a member until his death. Over the years he served the congregation in many capacities including Associate Pastor. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, March 22 at Faith Community United Methodist Church, 4310 Richardson Rd., Independence, KY 41051. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 P.M., Thursday, March 21 at Stith Funeral Home, 7500 U.S. 42, Florence, KY 41042. Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery, Owen County, KY. Memorials may be made to Florence Community Church of the Nazarene, 199 Richardson Rd., Independence, KY 41051 or St. Elizabeth Hospice, 483 S. Loop Rd., Edgewood, KY 41017.
