In 1973 I was living in Shreveport and often ate at Don's Seafood. Van Cliburn and his mother often ate there and I was fortunate enough to become a speaking aquaintance with them. When his father died in 1974 I attended the visitation with a friend, Van was so kind and appreciative, he took time to sit with me and share his feelings. Beside having a great talent he was a wonderful compassionate person He will be missed by many.

I was night auditor @ The Hilton Inn in the late 70's. One night Van Cliburn and a companion walked in, carrying various paper bags, and bickering about who would carry what.
I advised that there would be "no feudin' fussin' or fightin'" in the lobby. Van immediately responded with
I'll bet you don't allow no shootin' of guns either. I replied that's right!
He was so quick-witted, and genuine!
Rest in Peace.

As a child I heard Mr. Cliburn play with the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra when he was a teenager. As a music student at TCU in 1966, I was privilaged to see and hear him again. He is indeed a National and International treasure, and his funeral was a triumphant tribute to such as world figures honored him. God will be happy to have him accompany the Heavenly choir.

If Dr. Francine Reese Morrison, dear friend of your mother could write this, she would undoubtedly say you have gone to be with your Mother and The Lord. You, with your music opened doors to the hearts of the world.our lives were enriched because you were here.
Rev. Dr. Ben A. Morrison,
son of Dr. Francine and Jury Morrison

Our family was privileged to hear Mr. Cliburn who was "filling in" for Andre Watts in a concert at Bass Hall. What a magical evening! My heart is heavy but also rejoicing because of his faith.

As one raised in Kilgore and whose mother had the honor and privilege to have Van in her Biology class at KHS, I hurt deeply to learn of his passing. While at Juilliard, Van came down to the pier in New YOrk City as my mom, Mildred Russell, was about to board the Queen Mary. The photo still exists, Mom, 5 foot one inch, beside Van, 6 foot four. I was fortunate to attend an after-breakfast impromptu concert, for five of us, on my mother's little Story and Clark upright. Mom worked with Rildia on civic music business, and on such occasions as her breakfast, she always asked Rildia if she could "borrow" Van when he was home from Juilliard. Many from Kilgore hurt with me, I'm sure.
