Joseph Carriere Obituary

CARRIERE Joseph H. Carriere, 86, of Paris, Illinois, passed away at 8:34 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. He was retired after over thirty-five years as a marine engineer with Lykes Bros. Steamship Company and had also served as Vice President of the former Stewart Hog Ring Company of Paris. He was born August 14, 1926, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the son of the late Herman Albert and Mary Veronica (Guiffria) Carriere. He married Mary Stewart on December 4, 1960, at the family home in Paris. He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Mary Stewart Carriere; two sons, John Joseph Carriere of New Orleans, Louisiana, and James Stewart (Nancy) Carriere of Oakland, California; a daughter, Jeanne Anne (Steve) Singley of Costa Mesa, California; a brother, Guy Raymond Carriere of Tampa, Florida; and three grandchildren, Joseph James Carriere of Oakland, California, and Lila Jay Singley and Scarlett Grace Singley both of Costa Mesa, California. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jeanne Anne Carriere and Yvonne Mary Carriere. Mr. Carriere was a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, and served in the Merchant Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Marine Club of New Orleans and the Lykes Quarter Century Club. He was an avid sports fan and New Orleans Saints loyalist. Later in life, he followed the Chicago Cubs. He will be remembered for his love of ships and the sea, his pride in his New Orleanian heritage, his enthusiasm for outdoor work, his adoration for his grandchildren, and his unique sense of humor. The family requests the omission of flowers. For those who wish, memorials may be made to The National World War II Museum in New Orleans in care of Templeton Funeral Home, 600 E. Court St., Paris, IL 61944. A memorial service celebrating his life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at First Christian Church in Paris, IL. Friends are invited to join the family for fellowship at the family home immediately following services at the church. Interment at sea will be private at a later date. Hi Mary,

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I know how difficult it is to say "so long" to our loved ones. But, we know that we will see them again. I shared the idea that Kathy was usually on the dock whip my ship came in, so I expect to see her there when my spirit arrives in Heaven as well. Resting in Jesus' arms over these lest eleven months has be so comforting. I know that you will find peace there as well.
