VEALE Walter Nicholas Veale, Jr. (Dewey) passed away peacefully on January 3, 2013 at Canon Hospice at the age of 90. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy Rechtien Veale; his two children, Dewey Veale (Kathleen) and Debbie Pinto (Bob); six grandchildren, Erin Galaforo (Joe), Darin Veale (fiancé Jeanine Malbrough), Matthew Veale (Amanda), Katie Perez (Beau), Steve Pinto (Megan) and Kevin Pinto; great grandchildren Peyton and Blakeley Veale, Avery and Colin Perez, and Emersyn, Paxton and Rowyn Farve, as well as his loving cousin, nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Veale and Bertha Veque Veale, his sister Elaine May and brother-in-law John May. Walter was born in New Orleans on February 25, 1922. He was graduated from Jesuit High School ('38) and attended Tulane University, where he was a member of the Navy ROTC. In 1955 he joined the Insurance Co. of North America as a safety engineer where he retired in 1984. He served as a Eucharistic Minister for St. James Major Church until Katrina in 2005. Walter was happiest when he was surrounded by his family. He treasured annual vacations at the camp and celebrating holidays, especially those where he could dance. He enjoyed nature and was an avid fisherman and gardener. His workshop in the back of the house was his "man cave" where he built numerous items out of wood, fixed anything for anyone, and entertained his grandchildren for hours. He loved to read and learn, teaching himself (and others) calligraphy, painting, and chess. Walter was a generous and loving man, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Tuesday, January 8, 2013. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon. Interment will be held at All Saints Mausoleum. A special thanks to all of the caretakers at Serenity Home Health Care and Canon Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Canon Hospice.

Uncle Dewey you will forever have a special place in my heart. I will forever remember your wit, posative attatude, joy of life, love of family and friends, and your amazing green thumb. You were an example of what a husband should be, a father should be, a grandfather, great grandfather and friend. May you rest in peace with our lord and savior. With love Eric

I'm sorry about the error in my earlier message. It should be "gentleman and a wonderful co-worker".

I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad. I know how painful that can be as I lost my dad just before Hurricane Katrina.
May you find peace and comfort knowing that he is now free and in the loving arms of Jesus.
Please call me if you need anything Dewey.
