I was sad indeed, to read of Mere's death. I was principal of Waiuku College and employed Mere, charging her with the huge responsibility of setting up a Maori Studies Department, establishing Te Reo as a school subject and establishing a kapa haka group.

Mere more than met our expectations and the strong standing of Maori students in the college today has been built on the firm foundations laid by Mere.

I have no other way of contacting her family so I hope that this message reaches them.

Mere was not only a fellow staff member but she was also my friend. I shall always be grateful for what she did for us.

I send my aroha to all

It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing of Mere, she was a great Lady who was loved by many, may she have eternal peace. We are so sorry we are unable to be with the family to say farewell. Lew and Julie Pickens
