I knew Rosemary for a brief time when she was teaching bookbinding and book conservation in Auckland. Through the kind consideration of Bill Downie teacher in Bookbinding at the AUT, he allowed me access to the workshop and his wonderful teaching. Bill introduced me to the art of Bookbinding and hence to the teaching of Rosemary who came in to teach some classes. Rosemary was an utter perfectionist with an impeccable awareness of book conservation at a time when it was barely understood. I remember the beautiful studio she designed in Summer street and her immaculate treatment of early editions of Cook's Voyages. In the garden was a marvelous loquat tree. It was directly through knowing Rosemary and her teaching (even though only for a short time)that I have pursued a long and happy career in book conservation.
