WWII hero served Hawaii since '59
WASHINGTON Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, the influential Democrat who broke racial barriers on Capitol Hill and played key roles in congressional investigations of the Watergate and Iran-Contra scandals, died Monday. He was 88.
Inouye, a senator since January 1963, was currently the longest- serving senator and was president pro tempore of the Senate, third in the line of presidential succession.
His office said Monday that |he died of respiratory complications at a Washington-area hospital.
Inouye was a World War II hero and Medal of Honor winner who lost an arm to a German hand grenade during a battle in Italy. He became the first Japanese-American to serve in Congress when he was elected to the House in 1959, the year Hawaii became a state.
He was the keynote speaker at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and later reluctantly joined the Senate's select committee on the Watergate scandal. The panel's investigation led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
Inouye also served as chairman of the committee that investigated the Iran-Contra arms and money affair, which rocked Ronald Reagan's presidency.

Among many other things this great man is a star. Those who watch Ken Burns' series on World War II see much of Sen. Inouye from the beginning when the premed student and Red Cross volunteer treated the injured after the Pearl Harbor attack. The rest of the story is known, but is wonderful to watch. He was always the entire country's star and quintessential hero. I am proud to support the party he belonged to and served so ably. We will so miss this man. Aloha.

My sincerest condolences you the family of the famed Senator Inouye. I also salute him for his service to our country during WWII. My late husband Curtis served during the Korean Conflict. He was always thankful for men that had fought for our country during WWII. He collected many books and although not a scholar, he read them and taught me much about the subject..I was born on 12/26/42 so I knew only facts taught in school. I had two uncles who serviced in the Pacific Theatre but never spoke of it. I too am very proud of these wonderful men who are known as "The Greatest Genertion"! My prayers are with you. God Bless You..R.I.P. Daniel Inouye
