I met Shirley at the Writing Center in Englewood when she was working on her wonderful memoir: Before You Were Born. She became a dear friend. I cherished the time spent with her in our writing group and during our lunches. She amazed me, and all of us, with her energy, her love of family and community, her zest for life, righting wrongs, her insights, her travel, and her varied career. She was an inspiration and also a lot of fun. Her curiosity and sense of humor never faltered. She will be missed.
I got to know Shirley through the local Columbia University alumnae club. She hosted several meetings in her home and attended many more. Always an active, thoughtful and kind participant. I miss her already.
Shirley was a generous and kind woman, who inspired everyone fortunate enough to have met her. I only wish that I had had the chance to know her better. She was one of those rare individuals who was determined to make this world a better place -- and did her utmost to make that a reality.
Shirley was an interesting, friendly, and positive women who was extremely supportive both personally and to the community. She made a profound impression in the short time we knew her.
Shirley was an inspirational lady. I went to law school with her and together we studied and passed the bar. She was dear friend and I will miss her terribly. I was honored to have known such a tremendous woman.
