George Shea Obituary

George Beverly Shea, 104, of Montreat, often called "America's beloved Gospel singer," passed away Tuesday (April 16, 2013) after a brief illness.

Best known as the soloist of Billy Graham Crusades, George Beverly Shea was born February 1, 1909, in Winchester, Ontario, Canada, and was a son of the late Rev. A.J. Shea and Maude Whitney Shea.

Shea's first public singing was in the choir of his father's Wesleyan Methodist Church.

George Beverly Shea married the late Erma Scarfe in 1934 at his father's former pastorate in Ottawa, Ontario. They had two children, Ron and Elaine. Erma passed away in 1976. In 1985, Shea was remarried to Karlene Aceto at a ceremony in Billy and Ruth Graham's home in Montreat, N.C.

Mr. Shea attended Annesley College in Ottawa from 1926 to 1928, then Houghton (N.Y.) College from 1928 to 1929. From 1929 until 1938. Mr. Shea worked in radio broadcasting as an avocation while employed as a clerk in the headquarters of Mutual of New York insurance company. From 1938 to 1944, Mr. Shea was an announcer and staff soloist at WMBI radio in Chicago. While in this position, he met a young pastor named Billy Graham in 1943. Graham had taken over a radio program called "Songs in the Night" at Chicago's WCFL, and, having recalled hearing Mr. Shea's radio singing, enlisted him to help with the broadcast. That was the beginning of a long association between Graham and Mr. Shea. In 1947, Mr. Shea went to Graham's hometown, Charlotte, to sing in one of the first of Graham's citywide Crusades. Mr. Shea devotedly preceded the evangelist in song in Crusades over the span of nearly 60 years.

In his autobiography, "Just As I Am," Graham writes, "I have sometimes said that I would feel lost getting up to preach if Bev were not there to prepare the way through an appropriate song."

Also a prolific recording artist and composer, Mr. Shea recorded more than 70 albums of sacred music. At 23, he wrote the music to one of his best-known solos, "I'd Rather Have Jesus," to words by Mrs. Rhea H. Miller. The poem had been left on the family piano by Mr. Shea's mother, and after reading the words he sat at the piano and composed the tune.

Mr. Shea was the recipient of 10 Grammy nominations, earned a Grammy Award in 1965 and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Grammy organization in 2011. He was also a member of the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame, earning induction in 1978. For his significant contributions to Gospel music, he was inducted into the Religious Broadcasting Hall of Fame in February 1996. Mr. Shea was also inducted into the inaugural class of the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists' "Hall of Faith" in 2008.

Mr. Shea is survived by his wife, Karlene; his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Kathy Shea; his daughter, Elaine Anderson; his granddaughter, Tamara Anderson; a brother, Alton Shea; a sister, Ruth Willett; Karlene's children and their spouses, Steve and Fran Aceto and Nanci and Jack Edwards; and Karlene's grandchildren and their spouses, Ben and Tiffany Aceto and their children, Kylie Aceto and Knox Hampton Aceto, Bill and Sallie Aceto, Matheson and Jeff White, and Ellis Edwards.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Erma; his parents, the Rev. A.J. Shea and Maude Whitney Shea; and five siblings, Pauline Lusk, Whitney Shea, Mary Robinson, Lois Wright and Grace Baker.

Mr. Shea's public funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday (April 21, 2013) at Anderson Auditorium, 302 Lookout Road, Montreat.

The funeral service can be viewed at http://georgebeverlysheamemorial.org

A private family burial was held the following day at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, where Shea was interred.

What a wonderful man that God has used to lead others to Christ. I am glad that I grew up at a time when men, such as Mr. Shea and Dr. Graham, proclaimed clearly the Word of God. I just would like you to know George reminds me of (1 Chorn. 29:28)how as David, George too died at a " Good old age, Satisified in days." I grew up listening to Billy Graham Crusades, my Mother had the TV turned all the way up every time it was on. They still show the Billy Graham Classics on TBN and I love watching them. That group of Christian men changed the world for millions. Mr. Shae had a voice that was big part of the success of the Crusades. "How Great Thou Art" was Mr. Shae's song and he sang it with the Holy Spirit flowing out his voice. He was a great Christian Man and an inspiration to many. His voice will never be forgotten and "How Great Thou Art" will never be performed the same by anyone. God Bless the family and I will see Mr. Shae singing in Heaven one day.

Christ's love shone in this gentle man's eyes, smile, heart and wonderful voice! I am 62 years old, and I've listened to him, alongside Billy, for decades, beginning as a young girl, surrounded by my family in our living room. His singing was a sermon in itself! Such warmth and love he put into it! What an amazing blessing he has been to millions, myself just one of them! Though I never met him, I still felt a love and deep thankfulness for him. He had a special place in my heart. I've always loved his "I'd Rather Have Jesus,"...and oh, he does... for eternity!! Prayers for comfort for his family. I feel a "missing," and I know yours is great. But I, also, know there is rejoicing in heaven over the homecoming of this saint! What singing there!! God bless you.

Amen! It was at one of the crusades that was televised I remember being in awe of George and Billy Graham's message. The Lord filled me with the Holy Spirit and I wrote a letter. I don't remember what I wrote but I do remember that urge to write and that it was urgent that I put my feelings and what was on my heart into words as if someone was pushing me to do it. Faithful to the finish is well said and we witnessed the work of the Holy Spirit through the ministry of George and Billy Graham team. Let us carry on that torch and let our light shine before men so that they may give glory to God for the light they see in us.
