I visited my first art museum, The Art Institute in Chicago, after studying French art in Mrs. Hardebeck's class in the 1960s. It was amazing to me, and I, in turn, have taken my French students to many art museums locally and internationally. Carolyn was a poised, clever, caring, creative, compassionate, talented and fun-loving woman. She and Tom were a great young couple and from time to time they opened their home in East Gary to me to sit and spend an evening talking with them. I have never forgotten their kindness. I still have the original song sheets of the many songs she taught us. By reading this guestbook, it is obvious that Carolyn Hardebeck mentored many of us to prepare us for life and, ultimately, for our careers. Her legacy continues for generations. My thoughts and prayers are with Tom, Jennifer and Amy

So sorry to hear of your loss. I worked with Carolyn in the Valpo schools and have fond memories of her. Know that we are thinking of you and may your memories help you through this difficult time.
I still remember the picture of Robert Redford you kept in your desk. Your impact as an educator will not be forgotten. A tout a l'heure, mais jamais au revoir.
Tom and beloved Amy and Jenny. My heart is sad. I remember so fondly the time that Will and I spent with you and Carolyn during the early days of our teaching careers in East Gary. Unfortunately, time, distance, and divorce pulled us apart but I will always hold you (all) lovingly in my heart and as part of my life's best memories. I am so sorry that you have suffered the lost of this beautiful woman. You are in my thoughts. May happy memories pull you through the grief. Love.
Tom and family, I was so sad to hear about
Carolyn. What an inspiration she was to all of us. I fondly remember our trip to France with both of you.
Amy, Jenny, Tom,
We will all miss Carolyn. She was such a positive, caring person. We are all better for having known her. My condolences to your family.
Don't think of her as gone away, her journey has just begun. Au revoir, madame.
Jenny: So sorry to hear of your mother's passing.
Oh my! I'm so sad to hear this news. Mrs. Hardebeck was an inspiration to me as my French teacher at VHS. I think of her every time I hear an accordion and still talk about her classes and our Spring Break trip to France! She had so much passion for her work and taught so many of us not just the language but awakened a love of French culture - and culture in general - as well as new ways to learn. She also trusted us and treated like us adults on our trip which went a long way to teach us responsibility and respect.
I cherish my memories of her.
My sincere and deep sympathy to her family and friends. What a beautiful, caring, wonderful woman!
Mr. Hardebeck & family I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Hardebeck. She truly was a wonderful person & teacher that I remember when I was in school at Edison
Mrs. Hardebeck was my French teacher at Edison. She was always lovely and inspiring. My deepest sympathies to you all.
Adieu, Madame. Je me souviens.
Dear Tom, Jenny, and Amy,
My heart, prayers, and love go out to all of you. Mrs. Hardebeck was the teacher who inspired me to become an Italian teacher. I teach units on art history as well because of her. She played a huge part in my life.
It's hard to know what to say about this woman who was a light and a friend to me. She was a truly excellent French teacher, but an even better person. I remember when my grandmother died and I was not processing it very well. I hadn't been able to cry about it or talk about it. I went to her class early one day and she knew something was wrong. I told her about my grandmother and was finally able to cry. She immediately walked to the door and closed it before anyone else could come in. Then she hugged me and let me cry. Most of the class was waiting outside by the time I was done. She let them wait. Carolyn Hardebeck was a beautiful person and the world is a dimmer place in her absence. Love to Jenny, Amy and Tom. My thoughts will be with you all.
Mr Hardebeck, Jenny and Amy,
I am truly sorry to hear of Mrs. Hardebeck's passing. I have fond memories of her from my childhood when I was your neighbor. She was so sweet to me and made me feel like a member of your wonderful family. She will be missed.
She was a teacher, a parent and a friend to me (as you became, Tom). As I told Amy, she still makes me laugh from time to time as she did the first time she described french fries to me as "Jeanne d'Arcs." My affection for her safely here abides.
Tom and Family,
So sorry to hear of the loss of Carolyn. She was a gracious lady whom I had the pleasure of knowing for many years. You have lost the love of your life, Tom. She fought hard, but now she is at peace.

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Hardebeck's passing, she was one of my favorite teachers and such an inspiration to me. My deepest sympathies to her family.
I am often asked who my favorite teachers were in school and Madame Hardeback was always at the top of my list. Not only was she a caring and compassionate person, she infused life and passion into her French classes. I won't forget the singing and cooking and absorbing of French culture we were all able to enjoy because of this beautiful woman. She really understood how to make learning fun. I will never forget her accordion playing and amazing talent to make her students love the French language and culture as much as she did. What a beautiful person. She is forever in my heart and memories. My condolences to her family. Many will miss her.
I had the pleasure to work with Carolyn for 16 years at Valparaiso High School. She was a wonderful colleague and school leader. She cared deeply for people, and I will always be grateful that she introduced my mother to Ruth Laube. They became "life-long" friends, just as Carolyn predicted. My sincerest condolences to Tom, Jennifer and Amy.

We have another guardian angel in heaven to watch over us. You will always be remembered with the fondest of memories, especially during our high school years at East Gary Edison. Rest In Peace Carolyn!
