I first knew of Frank McCourt years ago watching Angela's ashes movie. I could not finish watching it tHe first time as his childhood was so hard and sad-and such misery. Years later I watched it again but this time with narrative of Frank McCourt & director speaking during the movie, and with this to hear all the details of the people of Limerick and his Irish, Catholic made me understand more about my mother and aunts whose grandparents came from this area of Ireland. And I recognized similar traits in them and how they were that were similar to characters he wrote about in Limerick. I had many aha moments. I could relate to his story and was glad to have seen the movie a 2nd time with his narrative to further describe the Irish culture. I recently listened to "'Tis" he wrote on CD -in my car, and it's taken about a week to listen to it. I have enjoyed it so much, many times laughing out loud.

My dear mother loved reading and introduced me to Frank McCourt's books. I got hooked and talked everyone's head off about them. I have not yet completed Teacher Man. Thank you Frank McCourt for sharing your life with us: similar to my mums, whom I love more than words can express. R.I.P. and thank you and my mum!

Dearest Frank.. you're most probably sitting in that disputed throne , eating from the golden plates and drinking the pint with the Lord in heaven,,as the good Catholic upbringing from the old days promised us. If indeed you're there, you might also be granted the ability to read this guest book, I want to tell you the story how I "met" you. I was on a safari trip to South Africa, where a delegation of Americans of the medical profession, were to spend their last days after a heavy conference, to take a shot at viewing the big 5.One of them however never joined in the expeditions and sat reading quietly in the lodge..I asked what was wrong, why come all this way..and do nothing.. The answer was..the introduction to Angela's Ashes.. no big 5 could ever equal that.. So I met you, and bought your book, and for the next few days I was not in South Africa, but in heaven, your sense of humour has made that holiday unforgettable , Say hello to the Good Man up there, and tell him we need a few miracles down here, as it's an awful mess down here, worse than Limerick and you should know, that's saying something. Be happy Frank, wherever you are.!

I just read "Angela's Ashes" for the first time. Like many others, I became riveted and inspired by Frank's story. He has helped me to count the many blessings I have and to enjoy life's "riches." I wanted to find out more about Frank and was saddened to learn he had passed away just a little over a month ago on my mother's birthday! I can only imagine the numerous souls he has touched in his lifetime as he has certainly forever touched mine. I am on my way to the library today to read "Tis"....Thank you Frank McCourt for the wonderful gifts you have brought to this earth and sharing your soul. God Bless You and all of your loved ones!!! May you be at peace with Him now....

What can I say about Frank that hasn't been said before? I'm still coming to terms with his death, it has hit me that hard because you see? I truly loved the man. He was the writer that most touched me in my lifetime and I have read a lot of writers. I think the reason so many people loved him was because we perceived his manificent soul through his masterpiece, "Angela's Ashes." With that book he not only achieved immortality but he was also forever encrusted in our hearts. We have lost a great man but he will go on forever, this magnificent man who suffered so much as a child but who was able to turn that suffering into great art. I take comfort on the fact that he lived a full life, he extracted the gems he had in his soul magnificently and gave us a beautiful book, a book that made us laugh, cry and rejoice at the power of the human spirit. His book is also a tribute to his mother, that indomitable woman who raised him with such great values, who created one of the greatest writers of our generation.

I am a genealogist and Frank's books helped me understand for the first time why some of my Irish ancesters acted the way they did. I'll always be grateful to him for opening my eyes.

I don't know how to reach Connor McCourt but if he happens to read this message, please consider adding "A Couple of Blagards" to You Tube. I saw parts of it once and I know others would enjoy it as much as I did.

Please accept my deepest sympathy to Frank's entire family. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Frank,

I feel as though I know you somewhat through reading your books. I felt close to you because of your writing, because of you as a teacher.

Teacher Man was an incredible book and my husband and I, both teachers, laughed and cried along with you.

My grandfather was a Presby from the North. He had that Northern look about him and the "odd manner." Everything I read in Angela's Ashes, reminded me of him and how much I missed him, how much I yearned to learn more from him. It also reminded me how lucky I was to get to know you a little through your books.

I wish I really got to know you. I feel like I lost another grandfather I only barely knew.

I just hope that where ever you are, you're with your mom, Angela, and your siblings, Margaret and the twins, and also Malachy McCourt, of the North but free of the drink, and you have all the eggs you can eat!

My sympathies to your family.

God speed, dear Frank. You will be sorely missed.

I sent my son to school with the book teacher man. I scolded him for his poor grades the week before.I required him to tell me something of the book every week. One week I asked him about the book.He said he lost it and didn't know where it was. Of course it was my copy and I was less than pleased...I had a conference night with his teachers to discuss my sons grades. The english teacher said she saw the book in my sons desk, and couldn't help but borrow it,because she didn't know. Mr.McCourt became a teacher! And not only did she borrow it but passed it on to many teachers,All who loved it. I was told they have now decided that his work would become required reading for our schools.Thank you.

I too am an English teacher and, as Frank would agree, reading student essays occupies a great deal of time; so when my mother said "Here, read a bit of this, dear"(handing me Angela's Ashes), I said not during the school year! But I read a bit and was caught like a fish on a line. To say I became a stalker might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I went to McCourt's lectures, spoke with him, and wrote to him-hoping I could get him to come to speak at my school (St. Francis-a saint, he told me he really loved). I ordered 30 copies of the paperback (which wasn't officially out yet at the time-and caused a bit of a stir when I asked him to sign my "unhard" copy!) for my students, and made his memoir the summer reading assignment ever since. I feel as if I've lost a dear friend, but he has left a part of himself behind that I can keep until we meet again.

I always wanted to sit down and write to Frank, telling him how much I loved his books! But I never got around to it. Which tells me how important it is to do things when you think of them and not put them off.
I had Frank as an English teacher during his Stuyvesant years and learned a lot from him. Shared a pint or two of good dark ale at McSorely's Ale House. Had wonderful conversations about life and literature.
He left us much too early.

You gave face to generations of oppressed Irish families...I am full blooded Irish of third generation. My grandfather lightened up after asking why he was so mean. Did not know it was what he learned; thus what was sent on. He sang to me after that; It will be my memory. Thank you for portraying the Irish as they were; opressed, discriminated, killed, denied. Frank McCourt was responsible for getting my most reluctant readers to read and actually finish a book- and they are seniors in high school! They loved reading Angela's Ashes, discussing it in class, hearing Frank read his book on CD, watching parts of the movie, and writing great essays on the themes and characters in the book. I am currently toward the end of 'Tis. My husband came home last week and informed me that "your author died yesterday". I had just finished praising Mr. McCourt to my family the day before, saying look at all he did with his life, how he came over here on a ship, alone with no family in NY, and MADE IT on his own. I had no idea he had passed. Actually, over the last few months, I have spoken of his experiences often. I wanted to write to him, not to say that I felt sorry for him because of his childhood, but I guess to tell him that he makes me feel proud.
I feel like I have lost a friend, I know it is silly, I never met him, but I have been reading his first two books since around February. I am looking forward to starting Teacher Man.
He will always be an inspiration in my life. I will never forget him. He has shown me that though you come from poverty, never give up. I am so grateful for his books. I am sure he has found peace.

Frank McCourt wrote about ,not only his childhood, but of my own ,as well,as many Irish descendents on different soils. I was raised in Nfld ,Canada from an Irish Catholic mother and an Irish protestant father, who also left us,as small children ( middle 1940's ) .We can identify with the strict Catholic upbringing, the schools and the hyprocrisy of the era, especially because we were from a 'mixed religious marriage' and I guess put the'poor'factor in there as well. The Church had so much power over people.
TG,eyes have been opened today because of people like Frank McCourt.
