Donald was the brilliant leader of the Long Island campaign to challenge LBJ in the democratic primary by supporting Eugene McCarthy's bid for the nomination. After the 1968 convention, he was our tireless leader in organizing the New Democratic Coaltion which took over the party and nominated George McGovern, inspiring us all that the political process was open and that we could work peacefully and politically to change the immoral policies of the government. Later he was instrumental in forming the Working Families Party in NY State. He was my political mentor and I am eternally grateful for all that I learned from him. I mourn his passing.
Thank you, Donald, for all you contributed to our country and the American people. It was an honor to work with you for the things that mattered and still do.
Don was an exceptional, gifted person. The world was truly a better place because of his passion for human and civil rights. Don and Doris were an amazing team, their individual accomplishments remain legend. Our condolences to the family.
Don was a mentor, friend and inspiration. On Sept 11th, I found refuge in his apartment along with 3 members of local 32BJ. We walked from downtown Manhattan and I knew that he would shelter us for as long as we needed on that tragic day. May his memory be a blessing and an inspiration. Love, Ilana Sumka
Don welcomed me with kind words and sage advice during my first month as the new Director of the NYCLU Nassau Chapter that he founded over 50 years ago. I am proud to have the opportunity to continue his incredible legacy standing up for those too often marginalized to stand up for themselves.
Don was treasurer, mentor, fundraiser, and friend to the entire Peace Action family, especially in New York State. We will all miss him and his insight, wisdom, and passion for justice.
Don's contributions to the Center for Working Families were enormous. From our first day as an independent organization he guided us with vision, humor and persistence. We at CWF will miss him enormously.
I am happy to have known Donald and Doris. He was a true warrior in the fight for social justice and peace. He will always occupy a special place in my heart. Go in peace my brother.
To all of us at Peace Action New York State, Don is our mentor, our godfather, our visionary, and I say "is" because we aim to keep alive every teachable moment he so generously gave us. Thank you, Don!
Don was a kind and generous soul. He'll be missed.
Don had such a generous, indomitable spirit. He will be greatly missed. Love and peace to you all.
Saddened by this...my condolences to the family.
A class act and a model for us all -- there is always another act in a life worth living!
All of us at the Center for Constitutional Rights are very saddened by the sudden loss of our dear friend Don. He was such a fixture in our civil liberties and human rights community, and such a generous person. Thank you for including CCR as a recipient of in memoriam gifts. We will miss Don very much.
Don, you will be missed; thank you FOR ALWAYS BEING THERE FOR ME! I will NEVER forget you, my friend!
Irreplaceable! Jill Greenberg & Jeff, Murray & Barbara Gold
