Rest in peace and rock on Pete Fornatale. Thank you for all the years of wisdom and guidance into good music. So many years ago when I first heard you on the in-comporable WNEW 102.7 you were a forerunner of the DJ pantheon. Condolences to the Fornatale Family. The air waves are certainly with greater distortion since your silence.

"There was magic in the radio, enchantment in the ether.
A power born of mind and brain, and yet a part of neither.
A power to be reckoned not in kilowatts or joules,
A means to let a single voice touch half a million souls."
-Ballad of the Sandman
Rest in peace Pete.
We do love you so...

R.I.P. Pete Fornatale (so sad) he was an awesome DJ on WNEW 102.7 back in the day of awesome rock n' roll! He even wrote his own fan letters! I miss his soothing voice and awesome interviews. The good old days when "Radio Ruled" with Vince Scelsa, Dennis Elsas, Scott Muny, Alison Steele the Nightbird, Jonathan Swartz, Pete Fornatale, Dave Herman, Richard Neer, Pat St. John etc.

My early music heart was formed by 'NEW, Pete, Scott, Dennis, Jonathan, Alison, Alex Bennett, everyone
else...then on to 'FUV, Mixed Bag made my Sat. nites, like a great friend, I think it was this past Jan 8th, when Pete celebrated Bill Graham's birthday by playing continuous live sets from The Fillmore(s). I had driven to the store, I couldn't get out of the car until his show had finished! Keep playin' upstairs' cause I can still hear your voice...

In the 70s we did a newsletter called "Cultural Information Service" primarily written for progressive Christian churches (especially their youth directors). We covered rock and as we put the newsletter together, we listened continuously to WNEW. Pete and his colleagues not only introduced us to some great music, they provided the soundtrack for our work. We will always remember him and remain to this day grateful. Here's a tribute we wrote for our blog: http://www.spiritualityandpractice.com/links/index.php?id=22818
April 30, 2012
Wow - I am still in shock. I met Pete for the first time at WFUV on air in 2010. I would ratehr spend my time talking with Pete about music than any other rock and roll personality. The Best! Never to be duplicated.
April 30, 2012
My deepest sympathies to the Fornatale family. Another great voice stilled. Thank you for sharing this great man with us for so many years.
April 30, 2012
Such a gracious and interesting person who educated me in the wonderous world of great music. I had the great opportunity to meet Pete recently... What a marvelous person who will be missed! I guess Levon needed someone to discuss his musical life with and since Pete is the best interviewer, it had to be. Rest in Peace.
April 30, 2012
I love Mr. Fornatale. All the DJ's on WNEW. There has never been a station that was so wonderful at introducing new talent and having such knowledge of the current trends in music. Mr. Fornatale help educate me and I am grateful. May he rest in peace with rock n roll playing forever.
April 30, 2012
I put out this thank you to Pete, to carry the message to his soul. Your Sunday mornings and eventual Saturday evening weren't supposed to ever end. We're all so lucky you were part of our souls in bringing us such beautiful perspectives of such interesting and also beautiful songs and artists. I, like so many others must feel, have lost the best friend that I never met face to face, but soul to soul.
April 29, 2012
Been a listener / fan for almost 40 years! Alternative Rock/Folk will miss him dearly.
April 29, 2012
Although I did not know about this man until his passing, if it hadn't been for Mr. Fornatale's influence on radio media, I might not have ever discovered Poco and their fabulous 2nd album, "Poco" back in 1971. Thank you for that, Mr. Fornatale. It's still on my "Only 10 Albums on a Desert Album" list at age 56. My sincere condolences to his family.

Pete Fornatale..or as I called him: "Jonathan Schwartz Lite" since their voices and approach to music history resembled each other in my way of thinking. Such a soothing voice Pete possessed. Many a night I would listen to the "progressive" rock of the '70s on WNEW FM 102.7 night afer night listening to the "deep cuts" of albums he would play. I'll miss him as I have missed Scott Muni, the Night Bird and Rosco..wow..life is slipping by. RIP,Pete. You WILL be missed.
April 29, 2012
How this sweet, sincere, gifted man will be missed. His soothing voice made evrything more alive. His radio and PBS presence has been a constant in my life for over 35 years. So many thanks to him. My sympathy to his family.

Pete, You will forever be a part of our hearts, music and life as you were in our childhood, youth and adulthood! You were our "mixed bag" of only goodness, compassion and passion for music, musicians and will remain a part of all of our yesterdays, todays and tomorrows! We will miss you but will know you are with us when each musical note and song is played on the radio. With many tears,

Pete Fornatale was a part of my life since he first sat at a microphone at WNEW FM in the late 60's. I've been a fan and admirer ever since. His voice has been stilled now. Mixed Bag was a huge part of my life in the 80s. Pete exposed me to great folk and beyond music that I still pursue today. Pete had a voice and a delivery and knowledge that set the standard.

I am so very sad about the loss of Pete. My heart and prayers go out to the Fornatale family.

A very important part of my life for nearly 30 years has been taken away.

There are not enough words to describe how much his work and spirit has influenced and given comfort to me.

So very sorry.

My Deepest Sympathy.
April 29, 2012
I will always remember an interview you conducted with Brian Wilson, how many years ago?, ending with an fascinating appreciation of the song "Until I Die." It was the reverb from the chauffeur's quarters! You made brought out something that was hidden, something human and meaningful, respectful of your interview, but also of your audience. Here, and in everything you did, you made a difference.

Thank you.

Pete truly was a great man. In the summer of 1969, just as he was joining WNEW, he introduced so many people to Neil Young was in the process of joining C,S,& N. He loved Poco and once played "And Settlin Down" twice in a row. Unprecedented! He used to fight with Scott Muni over who would get to play Tuesday Afternoon on Tuesday afternoons. He also confessed that he liked the Four Seasons and had the guts to play them on WNEW. More importantly, he approached everything with class and civility. And he never forgot his Catholic and Jesuit roots. There will never be another like him. R.I.P., my friend. And thanks for so many GREAT, GREAT , GREAT memories.
April 27, 2012
I'm another WNEW-FM listener from the late 60's and early 70's ... Pete was a great part of the music and culture of that period. RIP.
April 27, 2012
I listened to Pete when he was with WNEW FM. I always enjoyed his show and his insight into the music. Its an era gone by; sad for all us baby boomers.

April 27, 2012
Sorry to hear of Pete's passing. He had such a relaxed vibe as he presented some of the best music of our times. From WNEW and later on WFUV, I always enjoyed his radio work... Gone but not Forgotten.
April 27, 2012
I'm feeling so very sad about Pete's passing. I heard 2 guys on WFAN talking about Pete yesterday and I just thought that it had to do with his growing up in the Bronx. Then I turned to WFUV and the Beach Boys were singing "Add some music to your day", and somehow that struck me that something wasn't right. Pete made things right and he will be oh so sorely missed. My deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and long-time listeners like myself.
April 27, 2012
Sad news, indeed. I remember the wonderful days at WNEW FM when the open format reigned. Radio will never match it or be the same. RIP Pete - you gave us magic over the air waves.
April 27, 2012
My husband and I will truly miss him.
April 27, 2012
I worked with Pete at WNEW-FM in the late 60's & early 70"s. He was a very unique DJ and his ability to segue from one song to another in a special way has never been duplicated by anyone else. My condolences to his family.
April 27, 2012
Pete was truly a giant during the golden age of FM radio, when deejays knew and loved the music and shared their passion with the audience. He, Scott Muni, Allison Steele, Dick/Richard Neer and Dave Herman inspired their listeners.
April 27, 2012
From listening to Pete on Fordham college radio when he was a student there in the '60s to Mixed Bag today -- very sweet memories. Lived a mile away from the Fordham transmitter back then. The signal was so strong, it would come through on Channel 6 on the TV.
April 27, 2012
My memories will last the remainder of my life of the wonder of Pete Fornatale. Years of WNEW & WFUV gave me the soundtrack of my life. My sincere condolences to Pete's family, colleagues, friends and millions of listeners whose lives were enriched by this very special man.

I'm very sad to hear that Pete Fornatale has passed away. I have many fond memories of being interviewed by Pete on Mixed Bag, both with The Roches and with The Carolling Carollers. He had a wonderful way of making his guests feel welcome, respected and important, no matter where they were positioned in show-business hierarchy. Thank you, Pete. May you be free from suffering.

Pete is "the" DJ of the angels.
April 27, 2012

April 27, 2012
As a young teen growing up on Long Island WNEW was so critical to the development of my appreciation for music. I can still recall Pete's mellifluous voice and easy way. Thank you for being you.

April 27, 2012
Can you imagine the radio station forming in heaven with Pete, Scott and Allison, all with Dick Clark producing? You will be missed. Thanks for the music.
April 27, 2012
So shocked and deeply saddened to hear about Pete's passing. My entire teen years were marked by Pete and WNEW. I recently enjoyed listening to Pete on Mixed Bag. His interviews with musicians, were very interesting and his stories showed his deep love of music.

RIP Pete. You'll be joining that great band in the sky...
April 27, 2012
I grew up in the NJ area and remember fondly Pete's voice over the airwaves. Rock music was something that my parents I and I shared a love of and it was a way to connect with them and the greater world outside of us. I grew up on a steady diet of awesome music and Pete played a roll in that. I hope that he was welcomed by a heavenly host of musicians with a reception to "beat the band!"
April 27, 2012
I remember listening to Pete on WNEW-FM in the mid-late 70s (I'm pretty sure he had the 2 - 6 slot, didn't he? Right before Scott Muni?). His voice was so soothing and had such a calming effect. I always looked forward to his time slot to hear him and his music. Forty years later I still remember my summer afternoons, lying in the sun, listening to Pete. My condolences to Pete's family and friends.
April 27, 2012
A friend and collegue is what Pete Fornatale was to many and thanks to comforts of God's word he is resting in sleep (Ecclesiastes 9:5).
April 27, 2012
Pete has been part of my listening life for many years. Thanks for a marvelous education! Comforting thoughts to his family.
April 27, 2012
How sad: my heart aches to learn of Pete's passing! Pete Fornatale was part of a generation of fabulously talented and knowledgeable DJs at WNEW-FM including Jonathan Schwartz, Dennis Elsas, Scott Muni, Vin Scelsa and the late Allison Steele (the "Night Bird"). We shall not soon see his like again.

Rest in peace, dear Pete: you touched the lives of thousands who you never met, and left the world a better place than you found it!
April 27, 2012
Truly a sad two weeks for the Music World. We have lost Levon Helm, Greg Ham (Men At Work), Chris Ethridge (Flying Burrito Bros), Dick Clark, and, now - Pete Fornatale.

When FM was in it's infancy, Pete Fornatale was there with his free-form-radio format and expanding musical tastes of his many listeners.

I met Pete, years ago, at a Poco show at the Academy Of Music in NYC. A gentleman and true fan of such a great band.

Pete, keep the music playing in the Halls of Heaven and THANK YOU!

R.I.P.
April 27, 2012

April 27, 2012
God Bless you, Pete, and your family. I had the pleasure of meeting you at the Rock-Con Festival in July 2010 and spent about 15 minutes talking with you about your career and music. You signed your book for me and it was a moment I will always remember. I admired you during your days at WNEW-FM with "Scotts-o" and the "crew". The music and radio world has lost a "Treasure" and an icon.
My deepest condolences to the Fornatale Family.
Paul Rizzo (Manahawkin, NJ)
