Cousin, I think I missed something special about not knowing you. Perhaps in the next life we could all have a family reunion. Karen

When I was just out of art school and terrified of dealers, I screwed up the courage to go into his gallery on Thompson Street, because I loved his sensibility. I looked for a while and then he came out from the back room (just a wall really), and chatted with me. After a few minutes, the phone rang, he took it and then came out and said, "do you mind watching the gallery for a few minutes?". I was so honored. I held down the fort for a half hour or so, and then he returned, with a daffodil in hand -- for me. I was floored. And I never felt as intimidated by dealers after that. He was a wonderful man, and his shows were so thoughtful and close to his heart. Many of the artists he started out later became names. I was so shocked and sorry to hear of his passing. He will be remembered by so, so many in the art world whose lives he touched and enriched.

I am very saddened by Richard's passing. Though I did not know him very well, he was one of those people that possessed a ”je ne sais quoi” quality that made him unforgettable. He had a welcoming smile and a genuine inquisitiveness that always put me at ease. Kind, generous, thoughtful and inspired is how I will remember him. My deepest sympathies go out to all his family and friends.

Words cannot sum up how much I appreciated Richard and his love of the SS Columbia. He became a dear, dear friend, and I miss him greatly. My prayers go out to Ian and Richard's family.

I just knew Richard for a short time. He was a delight and always wonderful company. He was a lovely man and I always knew I was in for a great time when having Dinner w. him and Ian. He wowed all of us here in Detroit, MI and me when I saw him in NYC. He was always such a kind, warm welcoming person. I am very saddened by his loss.

Just a note to thank Richard for all his work on the Columbia which I hope will continue - as a Detroiter I love the Columbia and its rescue will hopefully serve as a fitting tribute!

I am so deeply saddened about the loss of Richard. He was one of my dearest friends for the past 31 years. He was a true and authentic friend. I will always miss his warmth, support, honesty, wisdom and humor. He was taken from us far before his time.

I return from months working at sea and am so sorry to hear our dear friend and great enthousiast Richard has departed this life. He was a remarkable man in so many ways.
Yet i will always remember his vision for the SS Columbia and trust it will be eventually realized.
Ships sink and sailors sail on. Sailors are lost and ships sail on.....

A truly great person who I will remember for his ambition and his courtesy. Someone we're lucky to have known.
