MIYAMOTO TIMMINS--Anne. After a long battle with breast cancer, Anne Eiko Miyamoto (Timmins) passed peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Sunday, September I, 2013. An actor and playwright, Anne's most iconic role was in the long-running 1970's Calgon detergent commercial that launched the phrase "Ancient Chinese Secret" into the pop culture lexicon. She appeared alongside Al Pacino in the Broadway show "The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel" and in David Hare's "Plenty" with Julianne Moore in Washington, D.C. In recent years, Anne's work as a fiction writer led to residencies at Yaddo, Ragdale, and Sarah Lawrence College. She won the Hawaii Prize in 2009 for her play, "The Mango Tree," which was presented the previous year by The Pan Asian Repertory Company. Anne has performed as an actor in many of their productions as an actor during her early years in New York. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Anne received her BA at the University of Hawaii, and M.S. degrees at New York University and Carnegie-Mellon. She is survived by her three children Mari Keiko Gonzalez, of Brooklyn; Justin Miyamoto Weiner and his wife Beth Foresta, also of Brooklyn, and Joshua Samuel Mitsuo Weiner, of Manhattan; three grandchildren Devon Kameko Gonzalez, Tyler Joseph Foresta Weiner, and Olivia Rose Foresta Weiner. She has one sister, Carol Miyamoto of Honolulu. Services will be held today Sunday, September 8, at 4pm at Riverside Memorial Chapel, on 76th Street in Manhattan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to panasianrep.org and in the notes section please indicate it is for the Anne Miyamoto New Works Fund.

I found my way here because I wanted to know more about more about Ms. Miyamoto Timmins. I've been reading through past issues of The East Village Other and came across a short piece about her in the January 1, 1966 issue. I thought it might be of interest to post a picture of that article here. When I read this, I had no idea she was the actress from the Calgon ads. I remember those fondly.

I met Anne by taking her writing class. She was a true teacher. Not only did she help my writing but I think of her every time I bake. My daughters know I will quote Anne even before we gather our ingredients. She was supportive enough to come to a reading of my play. She will stay in my heart forever. Condolences to Joshua, the rest of her family, and all of her friends. Ann Hirsch

I met Anne through Kim Chan, the Chinese-American actor that played The Ancient in the David Carrdine Kung Fu television series,...maybe around 1998 (?). We became good friends and even pen pals when she left NYC for a bit and then returned.
I enjoyed attending various Asian American performances and Heritage events with her and have thought about her at various times these past few years.
Sad to hear she has passed - I always thought we would be able to reconnect. Best wishes to her kids and grandkids.

Mari,
So sorry to hear that Carol passed away. I met her at Anne's funeral, and Anne often talked of her. Of course, Anne is always with me. Everyday I pass the condos where she lived, and it brings pack memories. Dear dearest friend, and Montclair is not the same for me without her.
Best to you, Josh, and Justin,

Hi Christine and thanks so much for your message. I'm sure that isn't true and that you were a wonderful friend to mom. We still miss her every day and sadly, her only sister, Carol, passed away recently on January 12th in Honolulu. Justin and I were fortunate to be able to be with her when she left us.

I was online looking up info about old commercials I remembered as a kid when I stumbled upon an obituary for Ann Miyamoto Timmins. My belated condolences to her children and grandchildren. It's always hard to lose a parent. Through the wonders of the internet I learned who your mother was and learned a little about what she did in her life. Now I wish I had done this years ago.

Her talent and warmth are still felt in 10/14.
We miss her today and every day. Her courage, her wisdom, her values are an inspiration to us all. She was a rare soul who was so real and genuine. I followed her from her teaching at The School on the lower east side of NYC to her acting at Arena Stage in Washington, DC .RIP my cousin.

We met at 70W 95th Street when we were all starting out as young parents, it was a beautiful place to raise our families and will always remain as the best place in our collective memories. One of the reasons for this was because of the people we met in our apartment complex such as Anne and Hal Weiner and Mari, Joshua was just a baby when we moved to New Jersey in 1970. We lost physical contact with many of the friends we made at 70 W, but we never forgot the people whose lives touched ours and through the years we'd heard about Anne's success as an actor and mentor through mutual friends, she remained in our thoughts always. Imagine my sadness when I saw her picture in today's Sunday Times Magazine as one of the souls who left us so prematurely this year. We are so, so sorry for your loss. She will not be forgotten.
With our sincere condolences -

I studied acting with Anne in a class for teenagers she taught at the Pittsburgh Playhouse Theater School while she was studying at CMU in the 80s. She was a wonderful and charismatic teacher. I will never forget how she described her processes of emotional association, and her many anecdotes about the working methods of other actors. I am so sad to come across this notice. I have always felt grateful for my experience in that class, which actually helped me become a writer.

Anne, you will always be in my mind when I write. I enjoyed your hospitality and guidance when you hosted us at your house for a playwrighting workshop. I will miss our meet-ups at the Write Group in Montclair, and I will always remember coming to your play in Manhattan and you coming to see my play at the NYC Fringe, you lifted my spirits that day and gave me good advice about theater.
For me your voice will always be there.
