So long, Uncle Bill.

The last few years, since Pony passed away, I tried to spend some time with Uncle Bill whenever I was in the Bay Area. The last time, I convinced him to head out in the rain for lunch at his favorite Il Fornaio. It gave us a chance to see how fast that wheel chair would run on wet pavement in traffic. During those visits, we talked about his early years as an eligible bachelor, the dynamic among his high-powered siblings, and the lives of his parents, my grandparents. I was hoping we'd get to have more of those chats, but I could tell that the effort grew more and more taxing near the end. I will always be grateful that he mustered his ebbing strength to share his story with me.

Thanks Dad for allowing me to call you Dad. I always remember the first time we met when you drove Kit and I to a Junior High Dance when we were 13. I also cherish memories at the Warnke Lane house and your fabulous barbecued butterflied leg of lamb, seasoned and cooked to perfection always on a Weber, never gas, grill. You have been a profound example of class, integrity, kindness, and the importance of education to our children. This is along with what you have given all the MDs and researchers you have taught and provided tools, which have led and will lead in the future to new drugs and therapies as well as decidated professionals for the improvement of health for all mankind, I believe, is your legacy. Much love, Anita

I was saddened to learn of Bill's passing, as I know my mother, Martha (Bears) Rich, was. Pony was her roommate at Simmons and much beloved friend thereafter. My mom knew Bill, through Pony, even before they were married. We knew something was amiss when a Christmas card she sent to Bill was returned yesterday, so I did a search online for her, and then called to tell her what I had learned. She reflected quietly “We [meaning she and Pony] used to babysit for his kids.” I can't tell you when or where that would have been. I met him only once or twice, but the last time he and Pony visited my mom in Boston (ten years ago?) it was sweet to see how relaxed and enduring their friendship was. My sincere condolences to his family.

I was very sorry to learn of Bill's passing.Besides being a superb scientist with major accomplishments to his name and the proud son of his highly accomplished scientist father,Dr Wilbur A Sawyer, Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. My Condolences to all the Sawyer family and extended family on your great loss. I will always treasure the memory of our friendship and of our wonderful scientific collaboration spanning over three decades. I am forever indebted to Bill and will always remember him with great gratitude and never ending appreciation.
With my Deepest sympathy.

A blessing to our family, Bill and Mom (Pony) were able to share a great many years together, which brought both much happiness, companionship and fulfillment. Bill was always very generous and available with wise counsel. We will miss him greatly.

Such a long and productive life that afforded all of us with so any wonderful memories. It was such a privilege to be your son, and our time "working" together at P&S, Bar Harbor, ME, Friday Harbor, WA, and Kampala Uganda was truly part of that privilege. So many memories, Dad, and so much love,

I always knew I was in the presence of greatness when I spent time with Grandfather. He touched and enlightened so many and he will definitely be missed. Reading his obituary makes me realize that the best way I can honor him is to live life to the fullest and never stop pushing myself to do more. Thank you all for your kind words; I'm sure Grandfather would be humbled by them.

My condolences to the expansive Sawyer family, who have lost an interesting and accomplished father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. My thoughts are with you all.
