Dear Joy, Grant, Andrew and all the family,

Shirley and I pass on our deepest sympathies to you all on the passing of Michael. As you will all know, the connection between the O'Dowds and the McDonalds stretches back many decades.

My father (and I) both played many cricket matches with Michael under the TCC logo and my parents enjoyed numerous social outings with Michael and Joy.

Joy and Michael were also two of the very first real friends my parents made when the arrived in Auckland in the early 1950's and that friendship lasted both of parents lifetimes.

Shirley and I feel for you all.

Dear Joy, Grant, Andrew and family,

Shirley and I are very sad for your loss. Please accept our deep and sincere sympathies. 'Uncle Michael' was a central figure in the O'Dowd's family history, from close relationships through cricket (my father played with Michael at TCC for many years as you will all know, and I too played many games with him chattering away behind the stumps) to the 'foursome' our respective parents made up on their many social outings.
I would like to have been able to attend tomorrow's service but alas it is not possible.
Our late mother would also have been upset as she and Michael had a close and complex relationship and both were not afraid to speak their respective minds to each other.

Joy and Michael were two of my parents first close friends after arriving in Auckland in the early 1950's and that friendship endured for both my parent's lifetimes. He will be missed.

With kind thoughts for you all.

Richard O'Dowd and Shirley Day
