We have a lifetime of great memories of you John my dear cousin! From youth to old age you packed your life with humour, good friends and great music and we remember it all - the endless family hoe downs and gatherings, the good fun bantering and laughter and along the way you seemed ageless - growing old was never in our minds! You were one of the youngest 80 year olds ever - you never lost your sense of humour and fun. You have left a big hole in our lives John and won't be forgotten. With love Valerie & John Hughes

Death is a unique experience to each of us. No one knows how the other truly feels because it is a private experience. Speaking for my wife and myself, John Surman had a big heart and extended true friendship to us when we visited your country. The memories of our last visit to the Manukau Heads Lighthouse and the views of the area below hold a dear place in our hearts. John had many proud stories to tell about the region. Let us remember John in such beautiful settings. Our sympathies are extended to each of you.
