My thoughts are with Shona's family and her friends, and I know at least one friend has travelled from Australia to go to her funeral. Shona and I met in 1969 as students in Wellington, and were neighbours in Sydney in the late 1970's. It is difficult for me to travel from Invercargill, but earlier this year we met again at her rest home in Auckland. Despite her illness, she enjoyed our visit and so did I. We ate chocolate cake and looked at the photos of my China trip. At one point she spoke my name which was difficult for her because of her debilitating illness. I thought Shona was brave, independent, intelligent, beautiful, funny and a delightful friend and neighbour. These were the qualities I saw again when I last saw her, and I left the rest home feeling inspired by such a brave spirit.

My thoughts are with you all today. I will remember the young vibrant Shona, her dry sense of humour, her intelligence, and her successes, but mostly her beauty.
